Outlook Andrew Painter
Andrew Painter battles rookie growing pains as fantasy managers look for signs of stability.
The second-place Phillies (38-33) are pushing for the postseason, but Painter has hit a wall, logging a 10.76 ERA and 1.96 WHIP over his last two starts. He remains the team's number three starter, though Philadelphia recently experimented with Tanner Banks as an opener to ease the rookie's burden.
His current 6.65 ERA is discouraging, but our models project a much better 4.62 ERA and 120 strikeouts over 111.0 innings rest-of-season. The elite raw stuff is still there, suggesting these struggles are rookie growing pains rather than a permanent regression.
This week, Painter is scheduled for a single start at home on June 17 against Miami's Sandy Alcantara. Our projection of a 5.73 weekly ERA makes him too risky to deploy, so fantasy managers should sit him until he shows improved control.
