Week 7 Trending Waiver Wire Pickups & Projections: Patriots Defense, Marcus Mariota Lead The Way!
Nobody is being added off the waiver wire more than the New England Patriots defense heading into Week 7!
Week 6 is officially in the books after the Los Angeles Chargers defeated the Denver Broncos in overtime on Monday Night Football. There were a lot of duds this week from elite quarterbacks (I’m looking at you Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and Kyler Murray) while several unowned players like Kenyan Drake turned heads on Sunday. And the surprises in New York continued and as a New Yorker, can you let this Giants-Mets fans enjoy some peace? The Giants battled Lamar Jackson and the beat the Ravens 24-20 in riveting fashion. Saquon Barkley owners were screaming at the television when he slid down at the ond-yard line on what was a smart football play to seal the deal. And the Giants are now 5-1 in an absolutely stacked NFC East. Meanwhile, the New York Jets shocked the world and moved to 4-2 by defeating the Green Bay Packers. I legitimately never thought I would write that sentence. Clearly, anything can happen in this game. And that is why it is so important to pay attention to the details so we can find those diamonds in the rough on the wire.

New England Patriots DEF/ST
New England is coming off a very impressive victory against the Cleveland Browns. Bill Belichick was determined to stop Nick Chubb and Jacoby Brissett couldn’t get the ball down the field against this secondary. The Patriots sacked Brissett four times, forced four turnovers (two interceptions and two fumbles), and only allowed 15 points on the day. All that was missing was a defensive touchdown (which they had done in each of the last two games). In Week 7, the Patriots get a 2-4 Chicago Bears offense that is coming off a brutal loss to the Washington Commanders. It makes sense that the Patriots are being added at such a high rate. They are a top-three defense in Week 7. While I wouldn’t blow your FAAB budget on this defense, they have proven they they can put up some serious fantasy points and find pay dirt.

New York Jets DEF/ST
Gang Green not only shocked the world, they made a statement in their victory over the Green Bay Packers. Zach Wilson barely had to throw the ball because Breece Hall shredded Green Bay’s defense and because New York’s defense held strong against Aaron Rodgers. Although New York forced just one turnover in the outing, they sacked Rodgers four times, and blocked two kicks, one resulting in a defensive touchdown to seal the win. The Jets are the real deal at 4-2 and have a matchup looming against Denver’s ugly offense. The Broncos looked lifeliess in primetime last night and you have to think that the Broncos might consider shaking up the coaching staff if Russell Wilson continues to struggle to move the chains. Overall, I understand why the Jets are being added at such a high rate but I wouldn’t spend too much of my FAAB budget on them heading into Week 7. As much as the Broncos have looked terrible, it’s hard for me to envision Wilson not turning it around against New York. I’d like to see the Jets defense prove it one more week before I spend a decent chunk on them. Buyer, beware!
Miami Dolphins DEF/ST
Clearly this isn’t a big week on the waiver wire with so many defenses at the top of the list. However, if you need to stream a defense in Week 7 and can’t afford the Patriots or the Jets, you may want to consider their division rivals in Miami. Although the Dolphins weren’t anything to write home about in their Week 6 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, they have a Week 7 date with the injury-plagued Pittsburgh Steelers. Pittsburgh is not only missing T.J. Watt and just about their entire secondary, but Kenny Pickett went down last week and Mitch Trubisky will likely be under center on Sunday. This is a great opportunity for Miami to put up some real fantasy points on the defensive side of the ball.
QB Marcus Mariota, Atlanta Falcons
Mariota is coming off his best game of the season. Mariota only threw the ball 14 times yet the Falcons scored 28 points and Mariota had three touchdowns (two through the air and one on the ground). His two touchdowns went to his tight ends, the first to MyCole Pruitt and the second to Kyle Pitts. Although Mariota only threw for 129 yards, he had an impressive 9.2 yards per attempt. As long as he continues to use his legs, he’s going to have fantasy appeal. If he’s not already owned in your league, he makes for a solid QB2. The Falcons have a tough test against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 7, which means Mariota may be forced the ball a but more than he would like in a game where Atlanta should be playing catch up. Fantasy owners should absolutely take the chance on Mariota.

TE Daniel Bellinger, New York Giants
The New York Giants are 5-1! It’s an amazing start to the season under new head coach Brian Daboll and the rookies have played a significant role in the Giants’ red-hot start. Bellinger has stepped up with so many injuries to the wide receivers corps in New York. With Kenny Golladay and Kadarius Toney hampered by injuries and Sterling Shepard out for the season, the young tight end was forced to step up against the Baltimore Ravens and scored his second touchdown of the season. He caught all five of his targets for 38 yards and the aforementioned score. Bellinger should continue to see a good chunk of the target share due to the myriad of injuries in New York. And he gets a very winnable matchup in Week 7 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. On the season, Bellinger has 15 catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns. He’s a startable tight end but he’s touchdown-dependent.
WR Wan’Dale Robinson, New York Giants
We discussed the injuries to New York’s recver corps but we didn’t talk about the rookie’s emergange in Week 6. After suffering an injury back in Week 1, Robinson returned to the field and caught three-of-four targets for 37 yards and his first touchdown as a pro. In Week 7, the Giants face a Jacksonville Jaguars defense that just permitted close to 400 passing yards and three passing touchdowns to Matt Ryan and the Indianapolis Colts. Robinson could be in for another big outing. He is New York’s WR1 by default at the moment so fantasy owners should immediately scoop him up off the wire.

RB Latavius Murray, Denver Broncos
In Denver’s overtime loss to the Chargers on Monday Night Football, Latavius Murray served as the workhorse while Melvin Gordon continued to take a backseat as he remains in the doghouse after fumbling four times in two weeks. Murray totaled 66 rushing yards on 15 attempts and caught one pass for -2 yards. It wasn’t an impressive performance by any means but it was encouraging to see Murray dominate the touches in the backfield. Although Mike Boone saw a few touches here and there, it’s clear that Murray is the RB1 in this offense. Although the Jets have looked good in recent weeks, Murray is potentially streamable in Week 7. He could serve as a flex option if you are desperate.

QB Matt Ryan Indianapolis Colts,
Matty Ice is coming off the best game of his season against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. Ryan completed 72.4% of his passes for 389 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. He looked completely in sync with his receivers Michael Pittman, Alec Pierce, and even Parris Campbell. Everyone in the Colts’ passing game looked fantastic, and it was the veteran’s accuracy on Sunday which made it happen. The 37-year-old looked like himself on Sunday, and he is currently available in more than 75% of fantasy football leagues, which is a travesty. It completely makes sense that fantasy owners are finally willing to give this guy a chance after his impressive game in Week 6. The Colts have a Week 7 date with a Tennessee Titans secondary that is allowing the fifth-most fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks. Ryan should flourish in Week 7.
RB Kenyan Drake, Baltimore Ravens
Although Gus Edwards and Justice Hill will likely return to the lineup soon, first-string RB JK Dobbins was outshined in Week 6’s loss to the New York Giants by Kenyan Drake. Drake tallied 119 yards and a touchdown on just 10 carries while Dobbins finished with 15 yards on seven carries. Not to mention, Dobbins apparently aggravated a knee injury that could keep him sidelined in Week 7. Although Drake isn’t a sure-fire start moving forward this season, he did enough in Week 6 to garner serious consideration on the waiver wire. In Week 7, Drake gets a matchup against a Cleveland defense that has been horrendous against opposing running backs. He could be a decent flex option for another week or two.
And that’s a wrap. Thanks for checking out our Week 7 Predictive Adds! Head back next week to see who fantasy owners are flocking towards ahead of Week 8!
