Is There a Quarterback in Denver?
In Denver these days the shine of the Super Bowl victory is pretty dull. The Broncos training camp has begun, and the real question is who will be the starting quarterback?
Mark Sanchez brings to the table 72 career season starts over several years, showing his struggles of course with fumbles and interceptions. Trevor Siemian comes from the third string last year with the Broncos, being said to have a strong arm. Leaving rookie Paxton Lynch, who was taken in the first round in a bold move by the Broncos. Coach Kubiak knows that preseason will be filled with questions of who's winning, how do they look, and have you chosen the starter yet?
For now, Kubiak is spreading the work out amongst the three in equal fashion. Sanchez got the first go with the offense on Thursday. Both Sanchez and Siemian looked to have put in extra time practicing since June. They were both recognized for looking comfortable and efficient with the ball, Siemian's ball seems to reach the receivers quicker.
Sanchez received praise from Kubiak noting he seemed relaxed, confident and sharp.
Lynch being the rookie is still in the mix but showed that he has some jitters to work out. His footwork has improved which is a good sign and shows promise that after a season of watching and learning he will be able to better serve his team. The nerves that rookies experience are tough, but in the right environment they can grow and overcome them.
It is apparent that both Sanchez and Siemian are the ones competing for the starting position. The competitive atmosphere is in the air at Dove Valley. Sanchez has the slight edge given his history, but if he has a rough go don't be surprised if Siemian gets a crack at quarterback.
So with the Thursday night opener against the Panthers on Sept. 8, expect a run heavy Broncos offense while the passing game tries to find it's identity.
