Top Prospect Pedro Ramirez Struggles for Playing Time and Hits Early On
Pedro Ramirez is searching for his rhythm in the majors, batting just .182 with two hits in his first 11 big league at-bats. The 22-year-old infielder was promoted on May 22 after a brilliant Triple-A stint, but he currently serves as the secondary option at second base behind Nico Hoerner. His quiet start coincides with a cold stretch for the fourth-place Cubs, who enter today's action with a 32-30 record and a three-game losing streak.
It is far too early to panic over Ramirez's slow start given the micro-sized sample of major league appearances. In Triple-A Iowa, he flashed exciting potential by slashing .312/.395/.547 with eight home runs in only 37 games. While regression is always a risk for young hitters, his minor-league track record suggests he has much more to offer once he adjusts to big-league pitching and earns more regular opportunities.
The Cubs finish their series against Oakland facing J.T. Ginn and his solid 2.87 ERA today, before welcoming San Francisco for a three-game weekend series. While matchups against Giants starters Robbie Ray (4.45 ERA) and Landen Roupp (4.22 ERA) look favorable on paper, Ramirez's projection of just 11.7 weekly at-bats makes him nearly impossible to trust in active lineups. Keep him benched for now.
