Grading Every Flames Player's Performance in 2023-24

Source sports.yahoo.com. | 11 hrs ago.

The 2023-24 season has officially wrapped up for the Calgary Flames, with their 5-1 win over the San Jose Sharks serving as their final game. With that said, let's take a look at how each player fared this season. After a combined 99 points over the past two seasons, the Flames were hopeful that Rasmus Andersson would produce similar totals once again. Anyone who watches the Flames closely knows there is far more to Andersson's game than just offence, so ranking him poorly based on the decline in points isn't justifiable.

'Every night, he was a rat': Why Martin Pospisil was Flames' best story this season

Source sports.yahoo.com. | 2 days ago.

During his end-of-season interview at the Saddledome, the rambunctious and sometimes-controversial rookie was asked about his reputation around the NHL. The answer was as unapologetic and blunt as each of the 238 hits that he delivered in his first campaign with the Calgary Flames. “Actually, I don't really care,” Pospisil replied, keeping a mostly straight face as teammate Connor Zary — also seated at the podium — burst into a wide smile.

Bell: Sutter pushed out by snowflake hockey players — gimme a break!

'Come Work Hard'

Defenceman Hunter Brzustewicz has already had a busy spring, but he's more than happy to extend it at WinSport with the Wranglers' black aces. Calgary plays the opening verse of its AHL playoff campaign Wednesday night in Tucson - a best-of-three affair that will be played entirely in the Grand Canyon State; Brzustewicz, meantime, is one of a handful of Wranglers rookies keeping fit and in form back home. Originally selected by Vancouver in the 2023 NHL Draft, Brzustewicz's NHL rights were transferred to the Flames in January as part of the trade that brought Andrei Kuzmenko to Calgary.

It's sort of amazing to think back on Nazem Kadri's season and remember a time when his play was a real cause for concern. It's a little subjective, but there would be a very strong argument to be made that Kadri was the Flames' best player this season.

Flames fans are hopeful that Kylington will get contract extension

Source sports.yahoo.com. | 3 days ago.

In a season with several lows, Oliver Kylington was able to provide the Calgary Flames with arguably the biggest feel-good moment throughout the entire NHL. Kylington was able to make his return to the Flames blue line in late January. It served as his first NHL game since the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, as struggles with mental health forced him to miss the entirety of the 2022-23 season, as well as a good chunk of the 2023-24 campaign. It was a long wait but was all well worth it when he was announced as part of the starting lineup ahead of a game on January 25 against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The 2023-24 NHL regular season is officially over for the Calgary Flames. The team was effectively eliminated from the playoffs in early April and will not partake in any postseason games for the second consecutive season. The franchise has a litany of issues including goal scoring and consistent special teams performances, as well as underperforming, expensive players like Jonathan Huberdeau. Another big positive from 2023-24 was the rise in production from some of the team's veteran players.

Craig Conroy is steadfast in his belief that the Calgary Flames don't need to trade away everyone and tank for a No. 1 draft pick. There are, of course, doubters out there who believe that a full-on rebuild is the only way that any NHL team can turn itself into a year-in and year-out contender. Flames Have a Jonathan Huberdeau Problem - The Hockey Writers Latest News, Analysis & More

Source sports.yahoo.com. | 6 days ago.

When Jonathan Huberdeau first arrived in Calgary after an offseason trade with the Florida Panthers, fans believed that the team was in as good of shape if not better to contend for a Stanley Cup. Not only were Huberdeau and Nazem Kadri believed to be good replacements for Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau, but several others that remained on the roster were coming off of career years. The Stanley Cup aspirations the Flames had never came close in 2022-23, as they missed the playoffs entirely.

Flames exit with optimism: 'I think good things are ahead of us'

For a second consecutive season, a black cloud was one of the leading storylines as the Calgary Flames digested the disappointment of a playoff miss, cleaned out their locker-stalls and split for their summer vacations. You might remember that Mikael Backlund made headlines with what he said — and, just as much, what he didn't — during his end-of-season media interview in 2023.

Calgary Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom says he just wants to win

Jacob Markstrom didn't take a flamethrower to the Scotiabank Saddledome. Anyone expecting him to go scorched earth on the Calgary Flames will be disappointed by the Swedish goaltender's end-of-season press conference on Friday afternoon. It was tough watching Flames management trade away so many of his teammates as they approached unrestricted free agency.

Calgary Flames want to promote NHL club as desirable destination for players - Calgary

Winning more games and the construction of a new arena will convince more NHL players that Calgary is a desirable place to play, some Flames say as they head for the exits. Calgary finished 17 points out of a playoff spot this season with a record of 38-39-5, and missed the post-season a second straight year. Other players such as Tyler Toffoli, Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau have headed for other markets in the last two years, although Nazem Kadri signed as a free agent two seasons ago.

Henry Harrington is quickly becoming a household name amongst Calgary Flames fans. Earlier in the season, Harrington was one of several kids who took part in a shootout at the Flames intermission. After making a tremendous move to find the back of the net, Harrington pulled off a hilarious and unique celebration that fans couldn't stop talking about. As it turns out, that wasn't the last we had seen from Harrington, as he was invited back to last night's Flames game to once again participate in a shootout during the first intermission.
