Coach Matt Rhule said after Saturday's preseason win at Washington that Moore didn't play due to shoulder soreness, Schuyler Callihan of SI.com reports.
Neither of the Panthers' top two skill-position players (also, Christian McCaffrey) didn't suit up for their exhibition opener, but the reason for Moore's absence was health-related instead of a healthy scratch. Moore's next chance to mix into game action arrives Friday at New England, but whether or not he takes the field remains to be seen. In the end, he should make an appearance in the preseason to continue working with Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold, the two candidates to start at quarterback for Carolina in Week 1.

Following his team’s 23-21 win, head coach Matt Rhule took the podium to give his initial thoughts on the initial contest. And, of course, he’d be asked right off the top if he’s ready to name his starting quarterback for the regular season.
“No, that was for today,†Rhule said. “That was just for today. So we’ll go back and look at this tape. Obviously, Sam got us in the end zone. Baker led us down the field. Looked like both guys played well in terms of production. We’ll go back and look to see where they are. But that was just for today.â€

The Washington Commanders made a game of it in the fourth quarter, even taking a 21-20 lead late. Still, the Carolina Panthers connected on a 45-yard field goal with 24 seconds remaining to win the preseason opener.
Washington quarterback Carson Wentz played into the second quarter in his first game for the Commanders. Wentz completed 10 of 13 passes for 74 yards. Wentz mainly targeted undrafted rookie tight end Armani Rogers but did have one excellent completion to wide receiver Terry McLaurin.
Taylor Heinicke played the remainder of the second quarter before giving way to rookie Sam Howell in the second half. Howell gave the Commanders a spark, but it wasn’t enough in the end
