Summary
Mitchell is projected by many to go in the first round. We have ranked as the WR8 in this rookie class and wouldn't draft him before the third round. He has the physical ability but seriously lacks the effort and toughness you want to see from a young prospect.
On film, he comes off as a much better athlete than a football player. A lot would have to change with his mindset for him to become a great NFL wide receiver, however, the upside is there. Still, he was the distant WR2 at Texas and we don't see him being more than WR2 in the NFL.
Strengths
- Good size for an NFL wide receiver
- Plus athlete
- Impressive and quick footwork
- Very large catch radius
- Is able to win 50/50 balls downfield
- Has the speed and skill to be a great deep-ball threat
- Excellent body control
- Attacks the ball away from his body
Weaknesses
- Lacks effort and intensity far too often
- Doesn't have a complete route tree
- Served as the WR2 at Texas, not proven he can be a WR1
- Not great after the catch, appears to be more lack of wanting at times than inability
- Bad blocker due to consistent lack of effort
- Subpar route runner
- Is much better at winning jump balls than contested catches thrown lower
Our Take
There are two ways to look at Mitchell because most of his shortcomings are due to a lack of effort and intensity. Personally, I wouldn't want a guy like that on my team. He's not good enough to be worth the headache when you could just grab another wideout in a very deep class.
His film makes him a borderline third-rounder to us. However, if all the physical talent is there and you know he's capable of great things, many franchises may think they can get him straightened out and help him reach his full potential.
