Discussing some of the best pitching performances from April 23.

All 30 MLB teams were in action on Tuesday, April 23, so it’s time to break down the top individual performances from the day.

Guardians 4, Red Sox 1

Ben Lively started and pitched well for Cleveland, but it was Scott Barlow that got the win out of the bullpen after getting a couple outs. Lively struck out seven batters over 6 1/3 innings, allowing a run on five hits and no walks along the way.

Emmanuel Clase struck out all three batters he faced in the ninth to earn his seventh save and lower his earned run average to 0.75.

Tanner Houck fell to 3-2 on the season after striking out four over six innings. He allowed two runs on five hits and three walks.

Reds 8, Phillies 1

Andrew Abbott started for Cincinnati but didn’t get the win after only pitching 4 1/3 innings. He allowed a run on two hits and four walks, while striking out three. Fernando Cruz got the win after getting two outs.

Cristopher Sanchez took the loss after allowing five runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks over three innings. He struck out three batters.

Pirates 2, Brewers 1

Bailey Falter lowered his ERA to 3.33 and improved to 2-1 after striking out eight batters over seven innings. He allowed a run on three hits and two walks.

David Bednar earned his fourth save and worked a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Tobias Myers made his MLB debut for Milwaukee, allowing a run (on a first-pitch homer) across five innings. He allowed four hits and a walk, while striking out four.

Dodgers 4, Nationals 1

Neither starter factored into the decision in this contest.

James Paxton started for Los Angeles, allowing a run on five hits and three walks over 4 2/3 innings, while striking out one. Patrick Corbin tossed 5 1/3 scoreless innings for Washington, allowing three hits and walks and striking out three.

Alex Vesia earned his first win out of the pen for LA, while Evan Phillips worked around three walks and a hit to post a scoreless ninth inning and earn his sixth save.

Derek Law was charged with a blown save for Washington, and Hunter Harvey later suffered his first loss.

Tigers 4, Rays 2

Neither starter was a factor in the decision in this contest.

Kenta Maeda started for Detroit, striking out five over five innings. He allowed three hits and no walks.

Alex Faedo was charged with his second blown save, but also earned his first win for Detroit. Jason Foley worked a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his seventh save - he’s not allowed an earned run this season.

Ryan Pepiot started for Tampa Bay, allowing a run on three hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four along the way. Colin Poche was charged with his second blown save and his first loss.

Yankees 4, Athletics 3

Marcus Stroman earned his second win for New York, striking out nine over 5 1/3 innings. He allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk, and has a 2.93 ERA this season.

Clay Holmes struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth to earn his ninth save - he also hasn’t allowed an earned run.

Paul Blackburn took his first loss after allowing four runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out five and walked none, and now has a 2.03 ERA.

Braves 5, Marlins 0

Max Fried was the top starter on Tuesday, striking out six in a complete game shutout. He allowed only three hits and needed just 92 pitches to get through the game. This could be the game that gets Fried going, as he’s still got a 4.97 ERA even after the shutout effort.

Trevor Rogers allowed five runs (three earned) over 5 2/3 innings for Miami. He gave up seven hits and walked one, while striking out four.

Cubs 7, Astros 2

Jordan Wicks earned his first win for Chicago, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out four batters and walked none. 

Yency Almonte picked up a save after getting the final four outs - he’s an option to close games now that the Cubs have turned away from Adbert Alzolay.

J.P. France fell to 0-3 after allowing five runs over five innings. He gave up five hits and four walks, while striking out six.

Royals 3, Blue Jays 2

Michael Wacha started for Kansas City, allowing two runs on eight hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings, while striking out four. Chris Stratton got the next five outs and picked up his second win this season.

James McArthur worked two innings and claimed his fifth save.

Kevin Gausman didn’t allow an earned run, but fell to 0-3 after three unearned runs scored against him. He allowed seven hits and one walk, while striking out two.

Twins 6, White Sox 5

Erick Fedde started for Chicago and struck out 11 over six strong innings. He allowed a run on three hits and no walks.

Steven Wilson blew the save and suffered his second loss after allowing two ninth-inning runs.

Pablo Lopez started for Minnesota, striking out six over four frames. He allowed three runs on four hits and two walks. Jay Jackson got his first win after allowing a run across two innings.

Diamondbacks 14, Cardinals 1

Tommy Henry earned his first win for Arizona after striking out six over six innings. He allowed a run on five hits and one walk. Logan Allen worked the final three innings to earn a save.

Steven Matz fell to 1-2 after allowing seven runs on six hits and three walks over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out four batters.

Mariners 4, Rangers 0

Logan Gilbert improved to 2-0 and lowered his ERA to 1.87 after working 6 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and four walks, while striking out six.

Dane Dunning fell to 2-2 after allowing four runs across 4 1/3 innings. He gave up four hits and three walks, while striking out seven.

Rockies 7, Padres 4

Ryan Feltner started for Colorado, allowing four runs on 10 hits and two walks over four innings. He struck out four batters.

Jalen Beeks earned the win out of the pen after working three scoreless innings. Justin Lawrence picked up his first save of the season after working the ninth - his ERA is still 6.23.

Michael King was roughed up for San Diego, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings. King struck out five.

Angels 7, Orioles 4

Griffin Canning got his first win for Los Angeles after working five innings. He surrendered three runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out four.

Carlos Estevez picked up his fourth save after striking out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth inning.

Grayson Rodriguez was dealt his first loss of the season after allowing seven runs on 11 hits and a walk across 4 1/3 innings. He did finish with seven strikeouts.

Giants 5, Mets 1

Logan Webb improved to 3-1 after tossing eight scoreless innings. He gave up six hits and a walk, while striking out four. Webb has a 2.33 ERA for the season.

Camilo Doval got the final two outs to pick up his fourth save.

Luis Severino fell to 2-2 after giving up three runs on five hits over six innings. Severino struck out five and walked none.
