Justin Verlander Nears Return Following Mixed Rehab Outings
The veteran right-hander is currently sidelined with left hip inflammation and has not appeared in a major league game since early April. Pitching for the fifth-place Tigers, who sit at 28-40 in the AL Central, Verlander recently made his second rehab start with Triple-A Toledo on June 10, struggling slightly by surrendering four solo home runs over 5.2 innings. He remains on his rehab assignment as he builds back his pitch count.
At 43 years old, Verlander's days of elite dominance are likely behind him, as evidenced by his 4.04 ERA and 1.40 WHIP last season. Our models project a 4.37 ERA and 1.32 WHIP over 138.0 innings once he officially returns. While his fastball velocity in rehab is encouragingly hovering around 93 mph, fantasy managers should expect moderate regression and a lower strikeout rate than his career norms.
With Detroit matching up against division rivals Minnesota and Cleveland, Verlander will not rejoin the big-league rotation in time to pitch this week. He is expected to continue working his way back to full health, making him an obvious sit for the current scoring period. Keep him stashed on your injured list until he is officially activated. Verdict: Sit.
