Paul Sewald | Fantasy Outlook

Paul Sewald steadies his ratios in middle relief for Toronto

Sewald has quietly rebounded over the past month, posting a sharp 1.13 ERA and 1.00 WHIP across his last 12 appearances. After being designated for assignment by Arizona in August following high-profile struggles, the veteran right-hander has settled into middle relief for a 75-75 Blue Jays team riding a two-game winning streak. With Louis Varland entrenched at closer, Sewald works largely in low-leverage spots.

While his 2.57 ERA over the last two weeks is encouraging, his 6.00 season ERA and reduced strikeout punch signal underlying vulnerability. Our models project him to finish around a 4.24 ERA and 1.22 WHIP across 51 innings. Without the ninth-inning duties that yielded 24 saves earlier this year, his recent stabilization does not carry sufficient fantasy value to warrant roster consideration.

Toronto faces a six-game slate this week, hosting Detroit before traveling to Texas. Our projections expect Sewald to toss roughly 3.1 innings with 1.7 strikeouts and negligible save opportunities across the homestand and road trip. Given his lack of closing opportunities and ordinary strikeout output, he should remain on fantasy waiver wires in standard formats. Sit.
