SEMYON VARLAMOV’S 2011-12 STATISTICS: 53 games, 26-24-3, 2.59 GAA, .913 SP, four shutouts, 3,151 total minutes.
This isn’t going to take long. Varlamov seemed like an unhappy professional basketball player during the first half of the season but was pleasant and well-spoken — perhaps even outspoken — and happy-go-lucky in the final months of his first season in Colorado. The young Russian, who dealt with extreme tragedy in his homeland with the Kontinental Hockey League plane crash in September, is the face and future of the franchise between the pipes, and the primarily reason the Avs feel so good about their goaltending next season, with veteran Jean-Sebastien Giguere also under contract. Varly, 24, is signed through 2013-14, after which he is scheduled to be a restricted free agent. So good chance he will be in Denver longer than the length of his current contract, in which he signed after being acquired in a trade last summer with Washington
