Kansas City Chiefs C Rudy Niswanger (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Nov. 4.

The Kansas City Star is reporting that Chiefs' center Rudy Niswanger will play again in 2009 despite suffering a serious knee injury last week against the Chargers. Niswanger could return as soon as two weeks against Jacksonville.

Our View: Niswanger was thought to be lost for the season after being checked out by doctors, but he is a tough guy who should be able to return this year. Two weeks seems a bit optimistic, but he should be back in the next month or so barring a setback.

Chiefs C Rudy Niswanger (knee) is not expected to be available for the Week 9 game against the Jaguars. The bye week won't be enough time for Niswanger to heal. It's another blow to a Kansas City offensive line that is among the worst in the league. NFL columnist Bob Glauber is reporting on Twitter that the Kansas City Chiefs have activated running back Kolby Smith off the PUP list. Smith is expected to see a good deal of playing time when the Chiefs battle the Jaguars on Sunday.

Our View: Smith could make things interesting in the fantasy world, as it looks like Larry Johnson might be done as the featured back in KC. If Jamaal Charles can't get the job done, Smith could have some potential as a fantasy sleeper.

Analysis: Charles could stick around as the No. 1 back in K.C. the rest of this season, as who knows if Johnson will return to the Chiefs after the damage he did. However, the Chiefs aren't the best running team in the league and often have to chuck it about in an effort to get back in games, so Charles will only be worth using as a low-end No. 2 or high-end No. 3 Fantasy RB/flex option in Week 9. At least he shouldn't be losing carries to anyone

Coach Todd Haley said Wednesday that he is "hopeful" Jamaal Charles will "grab this (Week 9 starting) opportunity by the horns." "He’s got a great opportunity here and I know he’s excited. He had a good day today," Haley said after practice. The Chiefs seem to be hoping Charles plays well enough to become their lead back for the rest of 2009. Cassel was only 10 for 25 for 97 yards and threw three interceptions behind an injury-weakened line allowed him to be sacked four times in the Chiefs' 37-7 loss to San Diego on Sunday.

Impacts: Cassel had thrown six touchdowns without being picked off in his previous four games, but this was an ugly performance. His first year in Kansas City isn't going as expected, but he's far from the only culprit in the Chiefs' misery.

Cassel threw three interceptions and completed just 10 of his 25 pass attempts in Sunday's blowout loss to San Diego. He finished with only 97 passing yards.

Spin: Cassel had been doing a good job of taking care of the ball this season, but his streak of 153 consecutive attempts without an interception came to a crashing halt. He was picked off on three straight possessions in the second half, though the Chiefs were already down by 20 at that point. The offensive line, which was banged up to begin with, deteriorated even further when Rudy Niswanger was hurt, and the Chargers' rushers spent much of the afternoon making life miserable for Cassel. He can still be an adequate QB2 with the right matchup, but he needs a major talent upgrade around him to ever become a starting-caliber fantasy quarterback.Sun, Oct 25

News: Chiefs QB Matt Cassel threw for just 97 yards in Week 7 against San Diego. It was the second time this season he has been held under 100 yards. Cassel threw one touchdown pass and was intercepted three times in the game. Cassel was replaced late in the game by backup QB Matt Gutierrez, who completed one pass for three yards.

Analysis: Cassel came into the game having thrown just two interceptions in Week 2. He was under constant pressure from the Chargers and made some bad decisions. Cassel has not thrown for 200-plus yards in back-to-back games this season, but he has had some useful games this year and can be thought of as a viable bye-week replacement QB when facing the right matchup. That won't be in Week 8, however, as the Chiefs will be on a bye. They'll return to action in Week 9 at Jacksonville -- a decent matchup for the Chiefs. Gutierrez will not be in line for any playing time unless something were to happen to Cassel. Ignore him

Analysis: Charles continues to see limited touches behind Johnson, who continues to see the majority of the carries despite his struggles. He is worth stashing in larger leagues in case his role increases as the season goes on, but is not a recommended play in Fantasy just yet. Savage is not worth owning in Fantasy leagues
