Luis Avilan, 32, signed on with Washington’s Nationals last January, agreeing to a minor-league contract with salary of $950K in the majors, and the lefty made the club’s big league roster out of Spring Training, but after his fourth appearance the southpaw told manager Davey Martinez that something wasn’t right.
“He came out of the game last time he pitched,†Martinez told reporters, “... and said he felt something in his elbow, unfortunately he’s got a tear in his UCL, so he’s weighing his decision on what to do.â€

Nationals re-signed LHP Luis Avilan to a minor league contract. Avilan underwent Tommy John surgery in April, so he likely won't be an option for the Nationals until after the start of the 2022 season. Still, the 32-year-old gives the club a useful and experienced depth option once he's ready to go.

With the losses piling up, Mike Rizzo could not stop talking about 2019 in his interview yesterday
The Washington Nationals 2019 World Series win was one of the greatest moments in my life. As I was battling cancer that year, that team brought me so much light. The World Series run riveted me and inspired me to keep fighting. I will never forget the joy I felt when Daniel Hudson struck out Michael Brantley to bring the Nats their first ever World Series.
However, it is 2025 now. I am five years cancer free, there has been a global pandemic and the world has changed so much. However, whenever the Nats top brass has to face a tough question, they revert to 2019. Mike Rizzo did it consistently in his interview with the Junkies. He defended Davey saying that people wanted him out after the 19-31 start to 2019

After months of waiting, Opening Week is finally upon us, and the Nationals’ 2026 regular season campaign will finally kick off Thursday afternoon at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs. It will be the second time they’ve kicked off a season on the road against the Cubbies, with the last time coming in 2012, when Stephen Strasburg threw 7 scoreless innings and an Ian Desmond go-ahead single in the 9th lifted the Nats to a 2-1 victory.

After last night’s epic World Series game, I wanted to talk about a World Series legend in Stephen Strasburg. Yesterday, Strasburg’s alma mater, San Diego State announced that the former World Series MVP would be joining their coaching staff.  A foul cursed position! A pox on thee! Out! Out! The Nats third base was manned to start mostly by Starlin Castro. As a player it was odd to watch the fans react to him. Over two abbreviated seasons he basically did exactly what you'd expect him to do, fill in the roll and fill it averagely, but Nats fans acted like he was the worst player on the field. Jordy Mercer announced his retirement on Tuesday. "Thank You baseball!," Mercer wrote on his personal Twitter account. "Thank you for the opportunity and love you have given me. Jordy Mercer went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBI on Sunday in the Nationals' season-ending loss to the Red Sox. The Nationals attempted to play spoiler on Sunday afternoon but were unable to edge the Red Sox in their season finale. Mercer kicked off the scoring with an RBI double against Chris Sale in the second inning and also added an RBI ground out in the fifth inning off righty reliever Garrett Richards. The 35-year-old veteran infielder finishes the 2021 campaign hitting .254/.307/.364 with two homers across 127 plate appearances.

Brian Goodwin has signed with the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League. Goodwin last appeared in the majors during the 2021 season when he got into 71 games for the White Sox. He played in the independent Mexican League and also in Taiwan's Chinese Professional Baseball League last year.

Brian Goodwin has elected free agency. Goodwin has opted for free agency, rather than accept an outright minor-league assignment, after being removed from the White Sox' 40-man roster. The 31-year-old outfielder hit .221/.319/.374 with 33 runs scored, eight home ruins, 29 RBI and one stolen base across 271 plate appearances last season.

A.J. Cole has signed with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows in Japan. Cole, who turns 30 in January, elected free agency after being outrighted off the 40-man roster by the Blue Jays back in September. He's actually pitched fairly well in recent opportunities in the majors, including a 1.13 ERA over six appearances this past season. Still, he'll take his chances in Japan rather than wait on the lockout to be settled.

A.J. Cole has elected free agency. Cole was limited to just six relief appearances with the Blue Jays this season due to injury. The 29-year-old righty should be able to land a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training this offseason.
