Among the top fantasy backstops heading into the year, Martin was one of the biggest disappointments of 2009. The loss in power is most concerning. That said, the fact that his plate discipline remained intact (69/80 BB/K ratio compared to 67/89 BB/K in '08) suggests he should bounce back in the average department. With his stock having plummeted, Martin makes for an intriguing bargain option for 2010. (click again to close) | C

Mark Loretta's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth on Thursday night completed an improbable two-out comeback as the Dodgers defeated the Cardinals 3-2 to take a 2-0 lead in the NLCS. The Cardinals led 2-1 with two outs and nobody on in the bottom of the ninth, and Ryan Franklin seemed to have ended the game when he got James Loney to hit a routine liner to left. Yet, Matt Holliday muffed the play and turned it into a double. Two walks and a Ronnie Belliard RBI single later, pinch-hitter Loretta drove in Casey Blake for a walk-off victory. PHILADELPHIA -- The Dodgers' decision to start Hiroki Kuroda was an understandable gamble that just didn't work, and manager Joe Torre wouldn't second-guess that call after Kuroda blew up early in their 11-0 defeat to the Phillies in Game 3. Kuroda may not get a second shot to start in this series, but that's OK. The Dodgers have several starters of similar ability, so Torre has a chance to tap a different one if they get to Game 7.

Manager Joe Torre didn't second-guess himself for starting Hiroki Kuroda on Sunday against the Phillies in Game 3 of the NLCS. "I don't second-guess the decision because we made it on what we saw," said Torre. "The ball didn't behave. That's basically all I can tell you about that." Torre opted for Kuroda instead of Chad Billingsley because of how he was able to command his pitches during a simulated game at the Dodgers' spring training complex last week. Kuroda retired only four batters on Sunday, allowing six runs on six hits, including a long two-run homer to Jayson Werth. Billingsley impressed in relief, yielding two runs over 3 1/3 innings, however the game was already out of reach. He could be in line for a start later in the series.Source: Los Angeles Times Related: Chad Billingsley (click again to close) | SP

News: Dodgers pitcher Vicente Padilla is recovering from a bullet wound in his leg after a target shooting instructor accidentally shot him. Dr. Eduardo Reguera said Padilla, who signed with the Dodgers in August, didn't need surgery after spending time at Managua's Metropolitan Hospital. Police spokesman Vilma Reyes said Wednesday that Padilla's pistol apparently jammed during a target shooting session late Tuesday. Padilla handed the pistol to a shooting instructor, a former police captain, who didn't realize there was a bullet in the chamber and shot himself in his hand, Padilla's legal adviser Roberto Calderon told The Associated Press. The bullet also grazed Padilla's leg. The account contradicts Padilla's agent, Adam Katz, who told The Los Angeles Times it was a "hunting accident."

PHILADELPHIA -- The boys in the bullpen started rising when Jonathan Broxton went 2-0 on Matt Stairs. "If he pitches around Stairs," someone yelled, "this game will belong to J-Roll."Somehow, somewhere in the reaches of Broxton's mind there was history, that moment last October when Stairs went yard off him to propel the Phillies to the world championship.
