JoJo Romero Navigates Recent Turbulence in High-Leverage Setup Role for Surging Cardinals

The Cardinals are rolling on a six-game win streak, pushing their record to 37-28 to maintain pressure in the NL Central. Romero remains a primary high-leverage setup option for St. Louis, especially with fellow reliever Ryan Fernandez currently sidelined on the injured list. While Romero continues to rack up holds, his recent form has been rocky, as evidenced by a 10.38 ERA and a 1.92 WHIP over his last five appearances.

Despite the elevated ratios of late, the left-handed reliever continues to miss bats at an elite clip, racking up seven strikeouts over his last 2.6 innings. Our models project Romero to stabilize over the rest of the year, tracking toward a 3.66 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP with 58 strikeouts over 64 innings. Expect his current 1.53 season WHIP to experience positive regression as his control and defense-independent luck normalize.

Looking at the remaining games this week, the Cardinals wrap up their series against the Mets before heading to Minnesota to face the Twins.
