Injury cloud and severe slump stall Braden Shewmake's breakout bid with the Astros

Braden Shewmake is day-to-day after exiting Saturday's game with right groin soreness, forcing Nick Allen to fill in. He had been serving as Houston's primary second baseman with Jose Altuve sidelined, but a disastrous 2-for-26 (.077) slump over the last 14 days has sapped his momentum. The fourth-place Astros (27-34) are desperate for middle-infield stability but may have to wait on Shewmake's recovery.

Though Shewmake flashed upside in May with two homers and a .250 average over the last 30 days, his recent slide suggests a correction toward his historical baseline. The former first-rounder is a career .156 hitter over three partial big-league seasons, and our models project a modest .200 batting average and .200 OBP rest-of-season. The power surge was a fun ride, but regression is hitting hard.

Houston plays six home games this week against the Pirates and Athletics, offering highly favorable matchups against struggling arms like Jared Jones (10.38 ERA) and Jacob Lopez (6.75 ERA), though they must also bypass ace Paul Skenes (3.03 ERA). However, with Shewmake's health in question and playing time at risk, fantasy managers cannot trust him in lineups. Sit him until he proves healthy.
