The Red Sox and Phillies, two teams that played each other this weekend, took very opposite paths, writes Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. The Phillies spent $50MM over four years for Jonathan Papelbon while the Red Sox went for the low-cost approach with arbitration-eligible Andrew Bailey. So far, things have worked out for both clubs, but in different ways. Red Sox relief pitcher Alfredo Aceves (0-1) hurled 1 1/3 scoreless innings to collect his ninth save of the season during Boston's 7-5 win over Philadelphia in an interleague contest on Saturday. Aceves replaced Rich Hill in the eighth inning and surrendered three hits, but was able to escape trouble and lower his ERA to 4.91 on the season. The Sox bullpen might have had its finest hour of the season protecting a 1-0 lead for Jon Lester who went seven innings in Boston’s 1-0 win over Chicago Saturday night. Franklin Morales, Vicente Padilla and Alfredo Aceves combined for two scoreless innings.
