Max Scherzer Nears Return After Strong Rehab Outing
Max Scherzer is nearing a return to the third-place Blue Jays rotation after tossing a hitless three-inning rehab start on June 1. Currently sidelined with forearm and ankle issues since late April, his successful 41-pitch outing suggests he is on the cusp of activation. Toronto, currently holding a 32-34 record, will eagerly welcome back the veteran once he completes his buildup.
Although Scherzer struggled with a 9.89 ERA over his first five starts of 2026, our models project a bounce-back to a respectable ~4.46 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 103.0 remaining innings. At age 41, the strikeout upside remains present with 98 projected punchouts, making him a highly anticipated rotation addition once fully healthy. His track record suggests the early-season struggles were heavily influenced by the forearm issues that led to his injured list stint.
Toronto plays a six-game homestand this week against Philadelphia and New York, but Scherzer is not projected to make a major league start during this stretch. He will likely need at least one more rehab appearance to stretch his pitch count before joining the active roster. Keep him benched for now, but he remains a priority stash in all formats. Verdict: Sit.
