Luis Castillo | Fantasy Outlook

Luis Castillo's late-season collapse pushes him out of the rotation during the playoff hunt

Castillo has endured an agonizing second-half slide, posting an 8.44 ERA and 2.19 WHIP over just 3.2 innings in the last 14 days. General manager Chris Getz recently noted the veteran's performance has trended sharply in the wrong direction, costing him consistent starting opportunities for the second-place White Sox (80-76). Even with injuries testing Chicago's pitching depth, Castillo has seen his workload slashed to mop-up duties.

The collapse is striking when weighed against our baseline projection of a 3.76 ERA and 1.19 WHIP, as well as his multiple sub-3.70 ERA campaigns in Seattle. Instead, a bloated 5.80 ERA and 1.51 WHIP through 125.7 innings highlight sustained decline rather than bad luck, fueled by heavy contact and a dropping strikeout rate.

Chicago travels to Kansas City before hosting Colorado, but Castillo is not scheduled to make a start in either series as the club turns to other arms. Without guaranteed innings or ratio stability, he holds virtually no fantasy value down the stretch. Sit.
