Verlander Nears Tigers Return After Strong Rehab Outing
Justin Verlander has not pitched in the majors since landing on the injured list with left hip inflammation on April 1, but he is finally on the verge of returning to the fifth-place Tigers (27-39). The 43-year-old veteran recently completed a stellar five-inning scoreless rehab start for Triple-A Toledo, and Detroit has already prepared a spot for him in the starting rotation.
While his lone big-league start this year was a disappointment, our models project Verlander to settle in as a reliable starter, forecasting a 4.37 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with 93 strikeouts over 138 innings. His baseline performance from last season, where he posted a solid 4.04 ERA, suggests his veteran savvy will easily prevail over these early-season injury speedbumps.
Detroit has upcoming matchups against the division-rival Twins and first-place Guardians this week, but Verlander is not projected to start just yet as the coaching staff finalizes his activation. Keep him reserved on your fantasy bench for this weekly stretch, but make sure he is stashed away. Verdict: Hold.
