But that doesn’t mean backup running back Latavius Murray isn’t working hard.

In his second year as a member of the Vikings, Murray is taking everything serious and is going to push Cook.

In his opening preseason game, Murray had four rushes for a game-high 43 yards.

“He’s been running well all camp,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said Monday. “The thing I liked about it is the acceleration through the hole when he found it, and he dropped his pads when he gets contact. But he’s been doing that all camp, so he’s looked really good.]]> 5270989 Mon, 13 Aug 2018 20:00:02 EDT Vikings Wire

Previously, it was the running back himself that was "hopeful" of a preseason appearance, which was substantiated by coach Mike Zimmer, per Andrew Krammer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Now, it appears Cook has a real shot to suit up a little more than 10 months removed from a torn left ACL. Even so, Cook is unlikely to see more than a series or two per game until the regular season.

Now 10 months removed from tearing the ACL in his left knee, Cook has been a full participant early in training camp, with his workload including full-team contact drills. He's clearly on the right track for Week 1, but it won't come as any surprise if the Vikings opt for a cautious approach during the preseason. If sounds like Cook would play in the preseason opener if the decision were his alone to make.
