Manager Mickey Callaway said that Syndergaard "will rest until he's symptom free" and that his finger is still "tender to the touch." Callaway confirmed that there is no timetable and that he will begin throwing once "all that subsides." That being said, it seems likely that the right-hander will be sidelined until the last week of the month, at the earliest, though a definitive target date should come into focus once he's tossing the ball around again.

Syndergaard hit the disabled list in late May with a strained finger. He appeared to be nearing a return and was set to start Sunday against the Yankees, but was scratched after experienceing swelling and discomfort Friday. His updated return date should become more clear following the second opinion.

[...]]]> 5232149 Tue, 12 Jun 2018 13:56:09 EDT <![CDATA[Syndergaard to miss Sunday start]]> Noah Syndergaard and Luis Severino will no longer occur. Syndergaard will not come off the disabled list as scheduled on Sunday, the Mets announced Friday, due to a setback he experienced while playing catch this week.

Spin: "It's something we knew that could happen," manager Mickey Callaway said. "We would love for him to pitch on Sunday. That's not the case, so Seth Lugo's going to step up and do a good job for us in his stead." On the DL since May 26 due to a strained ligament in his right index finger, Syndergaard threw a simulated game earlier this week, trying to prove to the Mets that he was ready to return. But the right-hander felt "a little bit of swelling and a little bit of discomfort" in his finger following a game of catch later in the week, according to Callaway, prompting the Mets to scratch him from the start. Instead, right-hander Seth Lugo will start for the Mets. Still, Callaway said the issue is not as serious as it was when Syndergaard last pitched in a big league game May 25. Syndergaard is "not necessarily starting from scratch" as he tries to make his way back to the mound, Callaway said, with plans to throw a bullpen session early next week. In the absence of Syndergaard, who was 4-1 with a 3.06 ERA in 11 outings, Lugo will make his second start of the season. Throwing four shutout innings in a spot start for Syndergaard on May 31, Lugo bounced back to the bullpen when the Mets took advantage of team off days to skip Syndergaard's next turn. The Mets hope Lugo, who threw three scoreless innings in a subsequent relief outing, can last into the fifth or sixth inning this time around.]]> 5230196 Fri, 08 Jun 2018 21:14:11 EDT
<![CDATA[Could return next weekend]]> Syndergaard (finger) could return next weekend in Arizona in a best-case scenario, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports.

Syndergaard was lined up to return from the disabled list Sunday, but the Mets changed plans after the right-hander experienced swelling and discomfort following a throwing session. If he does not have any further issues with the finger in the coming days, Syndergaard could throw a simulated game toward the middle of next week in a bid to return for the Diamondbacks series, set for June 14-17. Seth Lugo will fill in for Syndergaard in the rotation for the time being.
