The Dodgers will go to a six-man rotation for one turn this week with 20-year-old left-hander Julio Urias expected to make his 2017 major-league debut Thursday against the San Francisco Giants – a move the Dodgers have yet to confirm or make official.

But Dodgers manager Dave Roberts did acknowledge Monday that struggling right-hander Kenta Maeda will not make his scheduled start on Thursday. He will start Friday instead. The extended rotation allows the Dodgers to give an extra day’s rest to their starters during a stretch that will see them play 46 games in 48 days]]> 4877905 Tue, 25 Apr 2017 0:14:01 EDT OC Register Dodgers Blog

Spin: Urias has been throttled back in the Minor Leagues by a management wanting to limit his innings. Roberts on Sunday said struggling Kenta Maeda might be pushed back one day from Thursday to Friday night, which would leave Thursday's start in San Francisco open for Urias. On Saturday, Roberts was asked if Urias could start in San Francisco. "He might," a coy Roberts said before Saturday night's game against the D-backs. "Cryptic. We'll see. That start yesterday was the way it was supposed to look." Urias threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings and 93 pitches, which would set him up to pitch as deep as the Dodgers are willing to let him go. The 20-year-old left-hander made his third start of the season for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Friday night and took a two-hit shutout into the sixth inning. In the longest of his three starts, Urias threw 93 pitches over 5-2/3 innings – the kind of extended outing that would seem to signal his readiness to join the Dodgers’ starting rotation.

“He’s getting close. He’s getting real close,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, adding that Urias was “tracking” as planned]]> 4875212 Sat, 22 Apr 2017 21:28:02 EDT OC Register Dodgers Blog

Spin: He was stretched out to a robust 93 pitches over 5 2/3 scoreless innings Friday, after the club started him in the Minor Leagues this year to limit his innings. The Dodgers not only need the 20-year-old Urias back in their wobbly rotation, they need Wood back in the bullpen. Pressed into starting duty because of Rich Hill's chronic finger blister, Alex Wood did a decent job against the D-backs on Friday, responsible for the first two Arizona runs and charged with the next two, even though Chase Utley committed a throwing error and a pitch got past catcher Yasmani Grandal that was ruled a wild pitch in the two-run fifth inning. Wood has made two substitute starts this year for a total of 8 1/3 innings with an ERA of 5.40. But in relief, he hasn't allowed a hit in 5 1/3 innings.]]> 4874539 Sat, 22 Apr 2017 10:14:08 EDT

The Dodgers’ handle-with-care young left-hander made his 2017 season debut Monday afternoon for Triple-A Oklahoma City. In a ragged outing, Urias allowed two runs in 3-2/3 innings, walking four and throwing a wild pitch but striking out five.

The most important number from the outing though was 79 – Urias’ surprisingly high pitch count.

“He wasn’t efficient apparently,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said with a smile calling the pitch count “substantial” for 3-2/3 innings]]> 4858845 Tue, 11 Apr 2017 0:00:02 EDT OC Register Dodgers Blog
