Pollock / Cole Hamels extends himself to 6 innings in Cubs' 4-4 tie with Dodgers]]> Cole Hamels became the Cubs’ first starter to throw six innings this spring, although he did get peppered by the Dodgers’ bats Wednesday night.

Hamels was tagged for home runs by A.J. Pollock and Corey Seager as he allowed seven hits and four runs in a 4-4 tie before 16,061 fans at Sloan Park.

<![CDATA[Anthony Rendon / What will it take to keep Nationals’ third baseman Anthony Rendon in the nation’s capital long-term?]]>
Damn it. Max Scherzer was right. Again. As soon as Bryce Harper signed, agreeing on a 13-year/$330M deal with the Philadelphia Phillies on March 2nd, after two-plus years and the innumerable questions about where he’d land, the talk quickly turned to Anthony Rendon, and the third baseman’s future in Washington, D.C.

Rendon is, of course, the next potential free agent the Nationals are discussing signing to a long-term deal

<![CDATA[Adam Plutko / Adam Plutko was shelled for 10 hits and nine runs over 3 2/3]]> Adam Plutko was shelled for 10 hits and nine runs over 3 2/3 dreadful innings Wednesday against the Giants.

He delivered three strikeouts while issuing one walk. Plutko took it on the chin Wednesday, allowing three runs in the second, one in the third and five in the fourth before getting the hook. The Giants tagged him for seven extra-base hits including a solo shot by Brandon Belt to lead off the second inning. Plutko saw his spring ERA skyrocket from 4.66 to 9.45 as a result of Wednesday’s debacle. He’ll assuredly begin his 2019 campaign at Triple-A Columbus.

<![CDATA[Drew Pomeranz / Drew Pomeranz hurls five hitless frames]]> Drew Pomeranz logged five hitless innings Wednesday in his Cactus League start against Cleveland.

Pomeranz walked four and struck out one. He also had a successful night at the plate, recording an RBI single and a walk over two plate appearances. The veteran left-hander tanked with the Red Sox last season, losing his rotation spot in the process. He’s been on point this spring with a 3.21 ERA in Cactus League play, though when it comes to trust-worthy fantasy arms, he’s pretty far down the list.

<![CDATA[Jorge Lopez / Jorge Lopez got roughed up in Wednesday night’s Cactus League]]> Jorge Lopez got roughed up in Wednesday night’s Cactus League start against the Rockies, letting up seven hits and six runs (five earned) in just two innings of work.

He issued three walks while logging two strikeouts. The Rockies absolutely annihilated Lopez in the second inning, collecting five runs on six hits including a pair of home runs. Wednesday’s clunker raised Lopez’s spring ERA from 1.88 all the way to 4.41. The right-hander didn’t put his best foot forward Wednesday, but he’s still a near lock for the Royals’ starting rotation.

<![CDATA[Tyler Anderson / Tyler Anderson surrendered four hits and five runs over six]]> Tyler Anderson surrendered four hits and five runs over six innings Wednesday against the Royals.

The lefty tallied seven strikeouts against one walk. Anderson labored through a difficult fourth inning, yielding four runs in the frame. Three of them came on a mammoth home run by Hunter Dozier, who socked Anderson’s offering 452 feet. The 29-year-old has been anything but sharp this spring, slumping to a ghastly 7.71 ERA over four Cactus League appearances (two starts). Even in deeper fantasy leagues, Anderson probably isn’t worth the trouble.

<![CDATA[Cole Hamels / Cole Hamels scattered seven hits and four runs over six innings]]> Cole Hamels scattered seven hits and four runs over six innings Wednesday against the Dodgers.

The four-time All-Star racked up five Ks while also issuing two free passes. Hamels served up a solo bomb to A.J. Pollock in the game’s first at-bat and was victimized again in the third, this time by Corey Seager, who sent his one-out offering to Souvenir City. The 35-year-old took his licks Wednesday, though he offset his poor showing at least somewhat by contributing an RBI single off Dodgers hurler Dustin May. Heading into the final year of his contract, Hamels carries a sluggish 5.40 ERA across four Cactus League starts.

<![CDATA[Dustin May / Dustin May gave up three hits and one run over three innings]]> Dustin May gave up three hits and one run over three innings of solid work Wednesday against the Cubs.

The 6’6" right-hander outpitched former World Series MVP Cole Hamels on this night, notching three strikeouts over the course of his outing while allowing just one walk. May’s only slip-up came in the second when he surrendered three singles including an RBI base hit by Hamels with two outs in the innings. The 21-year-old has been a rock star this spring, yielding just one hit over nine frames. May is No. 69 overall and third in the Dodgers’ system according to MLB.com’s latest prospect rankings.

<![CDATA[Tyler Skaggs / Tyler Skaggs scattered five hits and three runs over five innings]]> Tyler Skaggs scattered five hits and three runs over five innings Wednesday in a Cactus League appearance against Cleveland.

Skaggs finished the day with two strikeouts. He didn’t issue any walks. Skaggs encountered all of his trouble in the first inning, allowing three runs with two coming on Jordan Luplow’s nuclear blast to left field. The southpaw settled in after that, blanking the Tribe over his final four frames. Skaggs impressed with a 9.26 K/9 last year but he’s mostly been a disappointment this spring, limping to an unsightly 7.45 ERA over three Cactus League starts.

<![CDATA[Carlos Carrasco / Carlos Carrasco yielded six hits and a pair of runs over 5 2/3]]> Carlos Carrasco yielded six hits and a pair of runs over 5 2/3 innings Wednesday against the Angels.

He fanned eight, walked one and also hit a batter. Cookie allowed both of his runs on Brennon Lund’s RBI triple in the fourth inning. While Carrasco’s spring ERA (4.73) is nothing to write home about, he’s been a strikeout machine, whiffing hitters at a rate of 12.15 Ks per nine innings. The Venezuelan right-hander has posted a sub-four ERA in each of his last five seasons and should be one of the first arms off the board in fantasy drafts this spring.
