Minnesota Wild roster 2024-25: Who stays and who goes?

Source sports.yahoo.com. | 23 hrs ago.

The Wild are almost at gridlock, with most of their lineup under contract. But that doesn't mean management won't look to make changes, especially after the Wild didn't make the playoffs. Star Tribune NHL beat writer Sarah McLellan analyzes the team's roster and forecasts what's ahead for each player: ADAM BECKMAN Left/right wing (age 22) Beckman had a chance to make an impression on team brass during a late-season promotion from the minors but chipped in only two assists. Contract: Restricted free agent. 2024-25 outlook: Re-signing Beckman would give Iowa back its top goal getter. Bill Guerin Has To Rebuild Trust With the Minnesota Wild Fanbase

Source sports.yahoo.com. | 1 day ago.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs started on Saturday, and for the second time in 12 years, the Minnesota Wild had already cleaned out their locker room. The players gave their media debriefings and went their separate ways for the summer. Fans in the State of Hockey are now left to either adopt another NHL team, or perhaps the Minnesota Timberwolves, to vicariously glom their championship dreams onto. In between, all eyes will be on Bill Guerin to see if he can get the organization on track for next year.

The Wild May Have Trouble Moving Gustavsson This Summer

It's quiet in Minnesota as the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs begin this weekend. Fleury had told the media that he wanted to play another season, but only if it was in Minnesota. With two goalies at the NHL level now locked in for next season, the attention now turns to what the Wild plan to do with prized prospect Jesper Wallstedt.

Wild have options to get better in 2024-25, just not a lot of them

Source sports.yahoo.com. | 3 days ago.

The Wild would have enormous capacity to improve their team this offseason if it weren't for that meddling dead cap space. In the meantime, general manager Bill Guerin believes he still can make his team a contender in 2024-25. “We want to win now,” Guerin said Friday, a day after the 2023-24 season officially ended with a 4-3 loss to Seattle at Xcel Energy Center. The Wild had been eliminated from the postseason for a little more than a week by then, marking the second time in 12 seasons they had missed the playoffs.

On cleanout day, Wild dispense with excuses

Source sports.yahoo.com. | 5 days ago.

A lot of ink has been spent on the Wild's myriad injuries this season, all of which played a part in the team missing the postseason for just the second time in 12 seasons. The primary message from everyone involved — from the players to general manager Bill Guerin — was that the team just didn't play well enough. What was most interesting were the internal theories about why the team stumbled. “I've always said in years past how much I would hate to play against us,” veteran forward Ryan Hartman said.

Filip Gustavsson on future with Minnesota Wild: 'We'll see'

Source sports.yahoo.com. | 5 days ago.

Filip Gustavsson hasn't lost the plot. He knows that when Bill Guerin re-signed Marc-Andre Fleury for one final NHL season, the Wild's goaltending plans became complicated. Certainly, playing the Gustavsson/Fleury tandem for another season makes sense. Fleury is a future Hall of Famer who, at 39, showed he remains one of the NHL's most athletic goalies. And while Gustavsson, 26, wasn't as consistent as he was last season, he finished with three shutouts and his share of terrific starts, including a 24-save effort in a 3-1 victory Monday against the playoff-bound Kings in Los Angeles. On the other hand, Minnesota needs to bolster its forward corps. Kirill Kaprizov, Joel Eriksson Ek and Matt Boldy,

John Hynes of Minnesota Wild to coach U.S. men's national team at world championships in Czechia

USA Hockey announced the appointment on Friday for the event that will take place from May 10-26. Hynes, who also coached the national team in 2016 and '19, finished his first season as coach of the NHL's Minnesota Wild this week, missing the playoffs. The 49-year-old has also been a head coach for the Nashville Predators and New Jersey Devils, and for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the AHL. “We're fortunate to have John leading our team,” said Brett Peterson, general manager of the 2024 U.S. men's national team and also the assistant general manager of the NHL's Florida Panthers.

Kraken Fun Facts After Season-Finale Win Over Wild - The Hockey Writers Seattle Kraken Latest News, Analysis & More

The Seattle Kraken concluded the regular season with a fittingly topsy-turvy 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night. As was discussed in the Kraken Team Awards earlier this week, the campaign featured a series of highs and lows, and a lot of that was encapsulated in Thursday's win. Regular season finales often bring out the fighting spirit in clubs that generally have not impressed – the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday as well. Seattle sleepwalked through the first two matches that began this four-game road swing.

Is 2024 the Ideal Time For the Wild To Trade Their First-Round Pick?

Source sports.yahoo.com. | 5 days ago.

The Minnesota Wild's season is over, and the State of Hockey can finally turn its attention to the summer. The Wild picked at No. 9 once (Marco Rossi) in 2020, when the Wild dropped into the top 10 after weird circumstances bumped Minnesota into the thick of the Draft Lottery. It's no secret that the Wild have built up an arsenal of young talent, with Boldy, Rossi, and Brock Faber already dazzling in the NHL and more impact prospects on the way.

Don't Blame This Season On Gus and Fleury

The Wild returned largely the same core that scored 100 points over the past two seasons. Marco Rossi replaced the departures in the forward group in some measure, and Calder candidate Brock Faber replaced Matt Dumba on the blue line. At first glance, it's easy to look at the numbers and point to goaltending.

Tye Kartye tipped in a slap shot by Oliver Bjorkstrand for the tiebreaking goal with 2:40 remaining, and the Seattle Kraken held on to beat the Minnesota Wild 4-3 on Thursday night to wrap up the regular season for two teams that missed the playoffs. Brock Faber answered Yanni Gourde's empty-netter with 1:46 left by scoring for the Wild on a 6-on-4 power play with 1:05 left and goalie Marc-Andre Fleury pulled, but Kraken goalie Joey Daccord — who had 21 saves — and the defense held up.

Playoff Teams Wild Fans Should Bandwagon

The NHL playoffs are set to begin on Saturday, so we are mere hours away from enjoying some of the most fast-paced action we could see on our screens. Unfortunately, our beloved Minnesota Wild will not be taking part in this first round, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't just not watch it. We are the State of Hockey, after all, so we should probably be watching as much very good hockey as we can. For better or worse, jumping on a bandwagon temporarily and putting some of your faith and effort behind a team could be a fun time.

Despite missing playoffs, Wild likely to get only slight draft boost

Source sports.yahoo.com. | 6 days ago.

The Wild's season will be over on Friday, an anomaly for a team that had made the postseason in 11 of the previous 10 seasons. Despite a 5-10-4 start that cost Dean Evason his job, the Wild made a run at a playoff spot that didn't officially end until last week in Colorado, and in fact went 34-23-5 under head coach John Hynes. The Wild have never held the No. 1 pick in the entry draft, and have picked in the Top 5 only twice, taking wing Marian Gaborik with the third overall pick in 2000, and center Benoit Pouliot fourth overall in 2005.

Marc-Andre Fleury signs a $2.5M extension with the Wild to return for next season at age 40

Source sports.yahoo.com. | 6 days ago.

The Minnesota Wild signed goalie Marc-Andre Fleury to a one-year, $2.5 million contract extension on Wednesday, bringing back the veteran for his age-40 season. Fleury, who turns 40 on Nov. 28, has had a prolific season in which he passed Patrick Roy for second place behind Martin Brodeur on the NHL 's all-time list in career goaltending wins. Brodeur (691) is still 130 ahead of Fleury, but don't expect him to stick with that long-shot pursuit. “I'm not doing this again,” Fleury told reporters after practice.

Minnesota (39-32-10, 87 points) is facing a long offseason after missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2018-19 campaign. The Wild have continued to play hard despite being eliminated from postseason contention, coming off back-to-back wins over the San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings. Meanwhile, Seattle (33-35-13, 79 points) also hopes to end its season on a positive note even though it will not compete in the playoffs. The Kraken have dropped four straight against the Sharks, Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues and Winnipeg Jets.

In the final week of the regular season, the Grand Rapids Griffins are trying to lock up home-ice advantage for the Calder Cup Playoffs. Between Kirill Kaprizov (2020-21 Calder winner), Matt Boldy (8th in 2021-22 voting despite 46 games), and now this dynamic duo, it's hard to believe there's more talent on the way. Quite a bit of it, all with the potential to make the Minnesota Wild next season. The Wild could graduate four first-round picks and two highly-hyped second-round prospects into the NHL next season. With so many potential Calder campaigns, how do we sort them out?

Marc-Andre Fleury, Wild Agree to $2.5M Contract for 2024-25 NHL Season

Fleury, who turns 40 in November, was a three-time Stanley Cup winner and two-time All-Star while playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins and finished with a goals-against average of less than three in 10 straight seasons from the 2006-07 campaign through 2015-16. Fleury joined the Chicago Blackhawks prior to the 2021-22 campaign, and they traded him to the Wild during that season.

Marc-Andre Fleury signs one-year extension with Minnesota Wild

One of the questions about the Wild's goalkeeping situation was apparently answered Wednesday morning when the team announced that it has signed Marc-Andre Fleury to an extension for the 2024-25 season that will pay him $2.5 million. Fleury, 39, joined the Wild during the 2022 season in a trade-deadline deal with Chicago and played his 1,000th game in the NHL this season. Sharing goalie duties with Filip Gustavsson and, more recently Jesper Wallstedt, Fleury has compiled a 17-14-5 record this season with a .895 save percentage and 2.98 goals-against average.

It's been a couple of days since the University of Denver Pioneers shocked everyone in the Frozen Four Championship by taking down the number one Boston College Eagles in a 2-0 shutout win. Most people doubted the Pioneers could get it done, let alone keep the Eagles off the scoreboard entirely; it was expected to be an absolute domination by the Eagles. The Pioneers came to play, and so did their Minnesota Wild prospect, Rieger Lorenz, who scored to help his team clinch the win. It was their 10th NCAA Championship in team history, and there will likely be many more, but looking back at this game, there are a few things the Wild could learn to incorporate into their game to be successful.
