The Stanley Cup Playoffs started on Saturday, and for the second time in 12 years, the Minnesota Wild had already cleaned out their locker room. The players gave their media debriefings and went their separate ways for the summer. Fans in the State of Hockey are now left to either adopt another NHL team, or perhaps the Minnesota Timberwolves, to vicariously glom their championship dreams onto. Filip Gustavsson hasn't lost the plot. He knows that when Bill Guerin re-signed Marc-Andre Fleury for one final NHL season, the Wild's goaltending plans became complicated. Certainly, playing the Gustavsson/Fleury tandem for another season makes sense. Fleury is a future Hall of Famer who, at 39, showed he remains one of the NHL's most athletic goalies. USA Hockey announced the appointment on Friday for the event that will take place from May 10-26. Hynes, who also coached the national team in 2016 and '19, finished his first season as coach of the NHL's Minnesota Wild this week, missing the playoffs. The Seattle Kraken concluded the regular season with a fittingly topsy-turvy 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night. As was discussed in the Kraken Team Awards earlier this week, the campaign featured a series of highs and lows, and a lot of that was encapsulated in Thursday's win. Regular season finales often bring out the fighting spirit in clubs that generally have not impressed – the Anaheim Ducks defeated the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday as well. The NHL playoffs are set to begin on Saturday, so we are mere hours away from enjoying some of the most fast-paced action we could see on our screens. Unfortunately, our beloved Minnesota Wild will not be taking part in this first round, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't just not watch it. We are the State of Hockey, after all, so we should probably be watching as much very good hockey as we can. For better or worse, jumping on a bandwagon temporarily and putting some of your faith and effort behind a team could be a fun time.

Fleury, who turns 40 on Nov. 28, has had a prolific season in which he passed Patrick Roy for second place behind Martin Brodeur on the NHL 's all-time list in career goaltending wins. Fleury, who turns 40 in November, was a three-time Stanley Cup winner and two-time All-Star while playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins and finished with a goals-against average of less than three in 10 straight seasons from the 2006-07 campaign through 2015-16. One of the questions about the Wild's goalkeeping situation was apparently answered Wednesday morning when the team announced that it has signed Marc-Andre Fleury to an extension for the 2024-25 season that will pay him $2.5 million. Fleury, 39, joined the Wild during the 2022 season in a trade-deadline deal with Chicago and played his 1,000th game in the NHL this season. Sharing goalie duties with Filip Gustavsson and, more recently Jesper Wallstedt, Fleury has compiled a 17-14-5 record this season with a .895 save percentage and 2.98 goals-against average.

It's been a couple of days since the University of Denver Pioneers shocked everyone in the Frozen Four Championship by taking down the number one Boston College Eagles in a 2-0 shutout win. Most people doubted the Pioneers could get it done, let alone keep the Eagles off the scoreboard entirely; it was expected to be an absolute domination by the Eagles. The Pioneers came to play, and so did their Minnesota Wild prospect, Rieger Lorenz, who scored to help his team clinch the win. It was their 10th NCAA Championship in team history, and there will likely be many more, but looking back at this game, there are a few things the Wild could learn to incorporate into their game to be successful.
