Doug Martin: I believe best football is ahead of me

Posted 4 days ago. via profootballtalk.com

The Buccaneers cut running back Doug Martin on Tuesday, ending a six-year run with the Buccaneers that featured two 1,400-yard seasons and two trips to the Pro Bowl. Those seasons are well in the rear-view mirror at this point, however. Martin struggled over 19 appearances in 2016 and 2017 and served a four-game suspension for [more]

Doug Martin released by Tampa Bay Buccaneers after disappointing season

Posted 5 days ago. via All Things Broncos

TAMPA, Fla. — Two-time Pro Bowl running back Doug Martin has been released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who may look for a replacement in free agency.

Martin rushed for a career-low 406 yards in 2017, when he averaged just 2.9 yards per carry after missing the first three games of the season while serving the remainder of a four-game ban for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancers.

The release comes less than two years after Martin signed a five-year, $35.75 million contract that would have paid him $6.75 million in 2018

Tampa save $6.75 million on salary cap

Tampa save $6.75 million on salary capAfter six up and mostly down seasons, Doug Martin's run with the Bucs is over. The two-time Pro Bowl running back was released by Tampa Bay Tuesday, a move that was expected after he failed to rush for less than 500 yards in four of the past five seasons. The decision will save the Bucs $6.75 million that Martin was scheduled to earn in 2018. Because of the structure of his contract, the team will absorb no dead money on their salary cap. (Tampa Bay Times)

FF Today's Take: The move was somewhat expected considering the savings and the zero dead money against the cap. Martin had a stellar 1402 rushing yards and 7 total touchdowns in 2015 but has only played in 19 games the last two seasons averaging 2.9 yards per carry. Peyton Barber is the leader in the clubhouse for the most work out of the backfield but don't be shocked if the Bucs address the running back position in the draft or free agency.

Released by Tampa Bay

Posted 5 days ago. via RotoWire

The Buccaneers released Martin on Tuesday, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Martin looked like he might be the Buccaneers' long-term solution in the backfield after amassing 1,673 yards from scrimmage and seven touchdowns in 2015, netting him a five-year, $35.75 million contract extension the following spring. However, the 2012 first-round pick regressed badly thereafter, averaging less than three yards per carry in both of the past two seasons while missing time due to injury and an untimely four-game suspension, which delayed the start to his 2017 campaign. In cutting lose Martin, the Buccaneers will save $6.75 million against the cap in 2018 while absorbing no dead money. Martin's departure currently leaves Peyton Barber as the top candidate to start at running back in 2018, though there's a decent possibility the Buccaneers address the position through the draft or free agency in the coming months.
