It feels like it has become almost impossible to pick Cincinnati Bengals games to start the 2022 season.
In reality, this year’s 0-2 start and flirtation with 0-3 isn’t all that different from last year’s slow start, the difference being a few unlucky breaks this time out.
But they now enter their third game in a row as notable favorites as they visit the New York Jets. They did the same before losses to the Steelers and franchise quarterback-less Cowboys.
Comparing things to last year again though, Week 3 is where Joe Burrow and the offense really heated up. It’s safe to think that can happen again against the 1-1 Jets, losers of a 24-9 blowout at the hands of the Ravens and winners over an erratic Browns team

You've probably seen this catch by Tee Higgins, but I wanted to post one that showed the other angle also. As for the rule, it's weird that you never see rubber come up from his heels and only his toes. I'm not sold that the heels actually touched down. pic.twitter.com/T9zUZPind2
Ja'Marr Chase said that Sauce Gardner told him the #Jets were supposed to switch on the wide-open TD. Chase: "The defense just got lost on a switch." (via @JayMorrisonATH)
After falling to 0-2, the Cincinnati Bengals faced a must-win game in Week 3 against the New York Jets, lest their season fall apart in the first month.
Joe Burrow’s offense found new life on the road, exploding out of the gates for big plays while the defense put on another strong showing. The result was a win that put them back on track just before a Thursday night game against Miami.
Here are some quick items to know following the game.
— Bengals started very aggressive on offense, winning the coin toss and taking the ball before getting into a heavy dose of passing with some creativity mixed in. They converted two third downs of eight-plus yards before Samaje Perine caught the game’s first touchdown
DJ Reader said he is very encouraged that the knee injury isn't more severe. He said he didn't return to the sideline in the second because they wanted him to stay off it. They put the game on in the locker room and he kicked back and took in the win that way.
Bengals tight end Hayden Hurst will be active today, per source. He had an injury setback on Friday but I'm told "good to go."
We will get comment from Evan McPherson and his feelings on Rihanna's music as soon as possible. twitter.com/AdamSchefter/s…
Tyler Boyd absorbed some contact and bolted for the end zone to help extend the Bengals' first-half lead.
Bengals safety Jessie Bates seals Cincinnati's first win with an INT to close this one. Another strong defensive showing for Lou Anarumo's unit.
Jackson Carman is being relegated to the inactives list now. What a crucial draft pick.
Mike Thomas just caught his first slant of the season
Not sure what happened elsewhere in the league today, but gotta think with a career-high 2.5 sacks and career-high 3 forced fumbles, Trey Hendrickson is a frontrunner for AFC Defensive Player of the Week. Would be the #Bengals first since Dunlap in Weeks 13 and 17, 2019
Zac Taylor: "Our receivers are as tough as they come. They really are. That's their mentality."
Joe Mixon said the sore ankle that forced him to the sideline is all good.
Bengals LB Logan Wilson has five INTs in the last two seasons, the most by an linebacker in the NFL during that span (via @ESPNStatsInfo)
I'm mad that Chris Evans has not been able to return ONE kick this year. Not one. They've all been touchbacks. MAKE RETURNS FUN AGAIN
First down: Sam Hubbard blows it up Second down: DJ Reader napalm up the middle Third down: Logan Wilson perfect drop for the INT. Bengals playmakers showing up for a huge series and momentum shift.
Bengals rookie Dax Hill gets his first NFL start.
RT La'el Collins officially is active. LB Germaine Pratt, who was listed as doubtful, is inactive. Jackson Carman is a healthy scratch, falling behind Max Scharping on the depth chart. Also inactive: RB Trayveon Williams OL D'Ante Smith TE Drew Sample DT Jay Tufele
Bengals LB Akeem Davis-Gaither currently leading the team with 13 tackles. Made the most of his start with LB Germaine Pratt (knee) out today.
The afore mentioned Cordell Volson pancake. Appears to be the glass eater Bengals asst. Frank Pollack wanted this offseason. pic.twitter.com/HJB5n2ip9Q
Fourth and 5 and Flacco finds the target with the highest degree of difficulty and it fails. Nice day for Chidobe Awuzie, who has had those routes blanketed all day.
In case there was any doubt, Bengals OL La'el Collins warms up at RT.
Lou Anarumo noted they should have had 3-4 turnovers last week vs Dallas. They are already at that number (if not more) today. Been thisclose to breaking through.
Devin Asiasi with a nice block down on the toss to Mixon. Early impact in his first Bengals game.
#Jets rookie WR Garrett Wilson has five catches for 61 yards today. He has 18 catches for 215 yards and two touchdowns in his first three games.
Breece Hall paced the Jets' backfield in snaps for the first time today. 39-37 over Michael Carter.
So much for all that momentum from Cleveland. The Jets have come out absolutely flat against the Bengals. At least Greg Zuerlein has been good so far, going 3/3 on the day. But the Jets trail the Bengals at the half, 20-9.
The hope was that the Jets would get some pressure on Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. They’ve gotten a little pressure but so far, just one sack of Burrow, done by Quinnen Williams, who now currently leads the Jets with 1.5 sacks this season.
Not only that, the third-down defense has once again failed the Jets when they needed it the most, including a back-breaking touchdown on a 3rd and 7 from Bengals wide receiver Tyler Boyd, where he bounced off of two Jets defenders, Jordan Whitehead and Michael Carter II, before going 56 yards for the score on the last play of the first quarter. Overall, the Bengals are 4/8 on third down, with both of their touchdowns coming on third down. Four of the Bengals’ seven possessions have ended with points
Tyler Conklin up to seven catches & 74 yards. He leads the #Jets in both categories.
With no setbacks and continued progress as he recovers from a meniscus tear and bone bruise in his knee, #Jets QB Zach Wilson is expected to be cleared by doctors next week, sources say. That puts him in line to play against the Steelers in Week 4.
Flacco to Elijah Moore. Incomplete. Turnover on downs. This is disgusting.
Probably the loudest boos I've heard on whatever the heck Joe Flacco just did there.
#Jets Quinnen Williams nearly went to blows with a coach on the sidelines 👀👀 pic.twitter.com/I17BeoHNXJ
WR Corey Davis is good to go for #CINvsNYJ.
Catching the CBS replay: Very interesting to see Chase starting to get annoyed with Sauce Gardner. Dunno if there's a better testament to how well the rookie is playing right now.
Chase TD. Looked like the same mixup as last week with Cooper TD. This time it was Gardner and Quincy Williams, not Gardner and Joyner. That's inexcusable. That's Football 101. Embarrassing. #Jets
The #Jets benched George Fant. Conor McDermott is in at left tackle. Wow.
Bengals RT La'el Collins is active today. He didn't practice all week. His matchup will be Carl Lawson. OG Jackson Carman is inactive. Apparently, Carman has lost his spot as the backup guard to Max Scharping, who joined the Bengals at the end of the preseason as a waiver claim.
D.J. Reed says the defensive players and coaches need to have a meeting to hash out the communication issues that pop up every week. "Unacceptable," he said. #Jets
Saleh on whether he considered Mike White: "No." #Jets
T George Fant (knee) is questionable to return #CINvsNYJ
Jordan Whitehead just dropped an interception right in his hands. Got both hands on it, actually, then it bounced off his facemask. #Jets
Looks like the #Jets are giving the help to Fant. I think that says a lot about what Max Mitchell is doing on the right side. He's a bright spot. Rookie might develop into a mainstay.
First time the Eagles have had three sacks in a 1st quarter since Oct. 12, 2014, vs. Giants at the Linc. Connor Barwin, Trent Cole and Vinny Curry sacked Eli in the 1Q and Eagles won 27-0.
Robert Saleh credits the #Bengals defense. Said offense needed to find ways to convert third downs. #Jets
I would go tempo if I were Mike LaFleur. See if that doesn't spark something. #Jets
The #Jets lack severe depth at the linebacker position. This injury hurts them. Marcell Harris is in there now with Kwon Alexander & CJ Mosley.
Great play by Micheal Clemons to bring down Chase.
The Jets have announced their inactives for Week 3 against the Cincinnati Bengals and there are no surprises. Most of the inactives have been inactive all season. QB Zach Wilson is out again, as expected, but this should also be the last week he is inactive. He was warming up in pre-game Sunday and is expected to be cleared and back in the starting lineup next week against the Steelers.
Wide receiver Denzel Mims and defensive lineman Bryce Huff are also inactive for the third time this season. Rounding out the inactives Sunday are tight end Lawrence Cager (C.J. Uzomah is back and Tyler Conklin and Jeremy Ruckert will join him) and cornerback Bryce Hall
No trainers are with George Fant on the bench. I believe he's sitting next to Duane Brown. #Jets
