Week 20 Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire Pickups (Mar. 7-Mar. 13)

Chris Wassel Mar 4th 3:48 AM EST.

The NHL waiver wire digs deeper into March for the week of Mar. 7 - Mar. 13. First off, it is day by day games played time.

  • Monday (Mar. 7) -- 5
  • Tuesday (Mar. 8) -- 11
  • Wednesday (Mar. 9) -- 2
  • Thursday (Mar. 10) -- 13
  • Friday (Mar. 11) -- 4
  • Saturday (Mar. 12) -- 10
  • Sunday (Mar. 13) -- 10

Again, note three of the final four nights. That is a lot of games including a double digit back to back. Let's break it down a bit further.

Teams Playing Five Games: Calgary Flames

Teams Playing Four Games: Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes, Colorado Avalanche, Columbus Blue Jackets, Florida Panthers, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, New York Islanders, Philadelphia Flyers, St. Louis Blues, Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs, Vegas Golden Knights, Winnipeg Jets.

Teams Playing Three Games: Arizona Coyotes, Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, Edmonton Oilers, Montreal Canadiens, New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, Seattle Kraken,Vancouver Canucks, Washington Capitals.

Teams Playing Two Games: Dallas Stars, San Jose Sharks.

In Week 20, the focus is again on that final kick of a weekend. There are quite a few three games in four day scenarios. We'll keep this one short and sweet.

Some Nice Commodities (Players Less Than 40% Owned)

W Jake DeBrusk Boston Bruins (9.1% Rostered)

The Boston forward got cranking in a big way over the past five games with six goals and two assists. It comes down to Jake DeBrusk burying chances. He has the ability, it just comes down to execution. When he does not execute, other aspects of his game suffer. It is well known. That is part of the reason why his ice time decreased. Then, there were the trade demands, etc. Get chances, pot chances, play more. It's relatively simple. Plus, this is what Boston needs so does he get traded? That part does not matter now. What matters is the forward is hot and still low-utilized. If he keeps getting the time (top-six plus), then go get him!

W Yegor Sharangovich, New Jersey Devils (9.3% Rostered)

Yegor Sharangovich just needed to be with the Jack. That is Jack Hughes, of course. When one looks at the New Jersey Devils, there is a lot of young talent that has the potential to keep producing. While the defense and goaltending are a considerable mystery, the offense is not. When it is going, the passing looks like a video game sometimes. Sharangovich has four goals and two assists in his past five contests as the ice time inches up again (nearly 17 a night). The second-year Russian distinctly suffered through a "sophomore slump" of sorts. His strength is offense. When that confidence is brimming, look out.

D Connor Murphy, Chicago Blackhawks (25.6% Rostered)

Yes, Chicago is bad defensively in most, if not all situations. However, that is good for some fantasy purposes. That means Connor Murphy has a little bit of value occasionally. When looking into "banger leagues", Murphy is playing nearly 21 minutes a night while averaging nearly four blocked shots a game and three hits a contest. That is over a five-game span. Furthermore, with Chicago bleeding scoring chances, that means good things for fantasy rosters. While Murphy is another one of those depth choices, those are vital this time of year as the fantasy hockey playoffs approach. When the schedule shifts, one can always drop later. Besides, maybe he ends up somewhere else soon?

G Petr Mrazek, Toronto Maple Leafs (19.4% Rostered)

This is a hellacious gamble. If one is desperate for a goaltender, Petr Mrazek could see two starts ouf of the four games next week for Toronto. Mrazek would be a low G2 or high G3 option. This is purely a depth pickup to take advantage of a heavier schedule. The problem is it is difficult to trust either goaltender for the Maple Leafs. However, at the least, playing time is a bit more open for Mrazek. Before the clunker against Buffalo, Mrazek delivered quality starts against Minnesota and Washington. That is not easy to do. Again, tread lightly and only use as a last resort for depth. The real risk may be the defense as much as the goaltending. When it's on, the goalies are too. When it is not, oh my.

Assets Owned At A Higher Rate (40-75% range)

W Jesper Bratt, New Jersey Devils (45.4% Rostered)

This is where we just keep the thing simple. If one has not done it already, go find Jesper Bratt, pick him up if he is available, and play him. His value has not quite hit its zenith yet. That may be debatable to some but New Jersey's offense is about as healthy as it will get. The results are frightful for opposing defenses. Bratt has seven points in his previous five contests and now has 50 points in 49 games this season. Bratt is on pace for a potential 30-goal season with at least 70 points if he stays healthy. Yes, the Devils will have to pay him. For fantasy rosters, that never matters. Just play, plug, and repeat. What are you waiting for?

D Jeff Petry, Montreal Canadiens (68.7% Rostered)

The defenseman has arisen! Maybe, just maybe, Dominque Ducharme was not the answer ever in Montreal. Yes, the Canadiens are still a horror show defensively but at least, they are far from dull. That means better prospects from a fantasy perspective. Jeff Petry now has a goal and two assists in his last five games. This is not world-beater by any means but this is progress. Petry is starting to block a few more shots and generate some better scoring chances. Averaging two hits a game and two blocked shots a contest is a tick up from the ghastly numbers before Martin St. Louis took over.

G Jordan Binnington, St. Louis Blues (70.1% Rostered)

The what have you done for me lately crowd may be all over this one. Ville Husso crumbled a bit late in that game versus the New York Rangers. It did concern a few people. Naturally, guess who has posted back to back quality starts? Of course, it is Jordan Binnington. While Chicago and Philadelphia are far from playoff-caliber teams, Binnington stopped 55 of 56 shots on the road. St. Louis does play four times this week and Binnington may just see two of those starts. That number could be more if Husso falters any more. Craig Berube, for better or for worse, will inch toward the veteran.
