The Coin Toss, And Other Big Day Betting Traditions

The Super Bowl isn’t just the number one day for buffalo chicken dip; it’s the biggest betting day of the year!

We’ve all been to Super Bowl parties in the past, where some guy is rooting for a specific score or outcome. Maybe you’ve even tried your luck at a Super Bowl box in the office pool. But, this year, with FanDuel Sportsbook now legal, we’re breaking down the 3 easiest and most fun bets that, even beginners, can place to join in the fun.

The Coin Toss

The Super Bowl coin flip may be the greatest two seconds in sports betting, and the amount of money that changes hands on it is wild. Out of the hundreds of betting options on the Super Bowl, from the color of Gatorade dumped on the winning coach to how often some Celeb is on camera, more money is riding on heads-or-tails than any of them.

Some bettors drop 5-6 figures on this one prop bet. No skill, just 50/50 chance: Heads or Tails?

So far, the coin has landed on heads 26 times and tails 29 times. Out of 55 Super Bowls so far, 25 teams have won both the coin toss and the game but no team has won both the coin toss and the game since 2014.

All we can really say is, if you’ve been feeling left out on all the betting your friends have been doing, tell them you bet on this year’s Coin Toss and they’ll know you’re part of the gang.

Over/Under: The National Anthem

The big game offers several “unique” opportunities before the festivities kick-off, beside the Coin-Toss and that includes the over/under on the length of the National Anthem. This year, Grammy-nominated country music star Mickey Guyton will be singing it and we all will be timing her.

Everyone will want to know on this prop bet if the time it takes to sing the national anthem is longer or shorter than the quickest scoring drive during the game. (Keep in mind that scoring drives mean “football time” and not “real time.” For instance, if Los Angeles had a scoring drive of 55 seconds, according to the game clock, and the national anthem was 1:35minutes and you took the under, you win).

At a National Memorial Day Concert in May of 2021, Guyton performed a lightning fast 1 minute and 23 second version of the song. Last year’s Super Bowl performance by Jazmine Sullivan and Eric Church lasted 2 minutes and 17 seconds, the third longest in 3 decades (Alicia Keys is the longest).

Over/Under: The Game

Do you want to root for Offense or Defense? If you don’t have a favorite team in this year’s game, taking the Over or the Under is a fun way to root for both teams. All you have to do is wager whether the total score will be above or below a total sum.

At the time of publication, the Over/Under is at 48.5 points. If you take the Over and the game score adds up to 49+ points, you win! We have no opinion on what the actual score may be but with the Over, you get to celebrate every score which is always a bit more exciting.

Other than these amazing props to get your started using FanDuel Sportsbook, they always have the best promotions for new users too. This year, they’re offering 56:1 Odds on either team to win. Essentially, pick the Super Bowl champion and you can turn $5 into 280!
