Fantasy Football For Breakfast (7/15)

The 2019 season draws closer and we need to keep our eye on every detail so we can construct a full tapestry of what's really going on: separate the hype from the real. Let's have Fantasy Football For Breakfast!

NEWS: Melvin Gordon recently commented that, "you can't just replace a great back." He used Ezekiel Elliott's 2017 suspension to point out how the Cowboys were a different team that year. He also added that the running back position is the second-most important position behind the quarterback and "should get paid as such."

ANALYSIS: The Eagles won the Super Bowl two years ago by essentially fading the RB position and using a deep committee. James Conner stepped in for Le'Veon Bell and produced with no issues & relative ease. The argument goes both ways.

All of us with eyeballs understand the days of workhorse backs are long gone and the contract values have spread out accordingly. Gordon has every right to hold out, but with that decision, like every action & reaction, comes with consequences. We could all ask our bosses right now for a raise and that's our right. I only say this because inevitably every offseason many fans boo-hoo athletes for being greedy or selfish in these cases. We all enjoy free will and our government affords us the free enterprise to pursue our own version of our lives, to self-determine our own well-being and happiness.

So let Gordon get his!

But for Fantasy owners, which is who we are and why we're here after all, you can only assume this holdout will last a while. Draft Gordon at your own risk! According to FullTime Fantasy's Advanced ADP, Gordon's low draft position has dropped from 1.09 down to 2.06. It's only been a few days and where do you think he'll fall in late August if this holdout persists? What do you think the Advanced ADP for Austin Ekeler or Justin Jackson is right now? Advanced ADP is produced from high-stakes drafts only and gives you the high and low draft positions so you can manage not just the average pick but the range of where a player is drafted. NEWS: Derrius Guice sustained a hamstring injury while rehabbing and he will be questionable through the duration of training camp.

ANALYSIS: A more recent update noted this injury happened a couple weeks ago. It's still entirely possible Guice is able to participate in training camp. Fantasy owners should try to look at the past year as a redshirt year. He's been able to work on his body, be a professional athlete, rehab, watch tape, be around the coaching staff, etc. This certainly doesn't mean Guice is guaranteed for success, but the best version of himself will be playing assuming he's met all his offseason responsibilities. In a clouded Washington Redskins offense with more questions than answers at every position, Guice should have no problems coming in and playing great assuming he's healthy. I love Adrian Peterson as much as they next guy but Guice will remind a lot of people of AD in the tenacious & hungry way he runs with the football.

NEWS: Tampa Bay Bucs RB Ronald Jones bulked up to 221 pounds, up from 208 pounds last season. Jones said, "I've put on a lot of pounds of muscle. I've been training with my guy, eating four or five meals a day, protein shakes right after workouts. I'm bigger."

ANALYSIS: These are my favorite offseason stories. And by favorite, I of course mean my least favorite. I don't get it. Look, I can appreciate Jones maybe taking the game and his body more seriously. He should be proud and I wish him well. I am rooting for him, just as a person, not as a guy who is also a Fantasy Football owner. However, this is a non-story and one of the classic fluff pieces that seems to come about every offseason without fail. Drafting Jones carries a lot of risk. Tampa Bay threw it a ton last year and they added Bruce Arians as head coach. So obviously, they're content to have Jameis Winston chuck it 45, 50 times a game. Jones just needs to be better than awful and he should consider it a win and even just that should put him ahead of Peyton Barber.
