Geno Smith and the Double Knockout?
Let's take a trip back to 2015, on a hot August day in a locker-room. This was literally a punch in the face for quarterback Geno Smith, leading to a broken jaw and losing the starting position to Ryan Fitzpatrick. Fast- forward to 2016 and here comes the second punch, although this one involves no physical contact.
The Jets gave Ryan Fitzpatrick as much time as possible to come to an agreement to play in the 2016 season. Leading up to this Smith was once again the starting quarterback, and all was right in his world. Smith was fully aware that if/when Fitzpatrick came to an agreement that he would be on the sideline this season.
Smith is understandably upset and "pissed" but not at any particular person. He understands that business is business, and in this league you are always on display. He is aware that this upcoming season is a test and a try out for all the other teams in the league for 2017. He has matured in the sense that he didn't ask to be released, and so far is behaving like a team player.
Every player in the NFL wants to be out there playing to their fullest potential, so watching from the sidelines for another year is a tough pill to swallow. So far Smith is supporting Fitzpatrick and has the bigger picture in mind. He knows that everything he says and does will be under a microscope, and if he wishes to continue his career he must act mature and rise above his own feelings.
Will 2017 be the year Geno Smith finally gets to showcase his talents? Or will he receive his third and final punch?
