Week 22 Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pickups: Add Yankees' Domingo German!

Will Desvallees Aug 30th 1:53 PM EDT.

The 2022 MLB season is starting to wind down and there are only a few weeks left of fantasy baseball remaining. For that reason, good free agents are becoming scarcer by the day. In Week 22, SP Domingo German, C Christian Vazquez, and OF Mark Canha are the hottest ball players to scoop off of the waiver wire. Let’s take a look at the best fantasy baseball free agents to claim from waivers in Week 22.

SP Domingo German, New York Yankees (33.91% Owned)

In his last two starts for the Yankees, Domingo German has performed superbly at the mound. He’s produced at least 21 FPTS in his last two starts. On August 22, he led the Yankees to a 4-2 victory over the New York Mets in the Bronx where he struck out three batters and only allowed one run in 6.3 innings. On Saturday night, German pitched 7.7 innings where he only three 79 pitches to strike out five Athletics hitters and allow no runs. German only got his first start this season in late July and has now pitched eight games for the Yankees so far this season. Since he’s finally been finding a rhythm in his last two starts, German is a great starting pitcher to consider scooping in Week 22 as he is available as a free agent in more than 65% of fantasy baseball leagues.

1B Joey Meneses, Washington Nationals (27.21% Owned)

Rookie first baseman Joey Meneses has now played in 22 games for the Nationals this season after his major league debut on August 2. Since then, he’s recorded 28 hits, for six home runs, nine RBIS, for a .333 BA, and a .371 OBP. He’s also rocking a red-hot .954 OPS, further demonstrating how well this rookie is playing despite having made his debut less than a month ago. First base is a shallow position to fill in fantasy baseball leagues. At the moment, Meneses' availability on waiver-wires and his efficiency as a batter make him a great free-agent option in Week 22.

C Christian Vazquez, Houston Astros (60.00% Owned)

Veteran catcher Christian Vazquez was traded to Houston from the Boston Red Sox by the trade deadline this season. Since he started for the Astros, he’s played much better baseball than he has this season on average. In fact, Vazquez has played incredibly since making his debut for the Astros on August 2. Vazquez has played in 15 games for the Astros so far. In 39 ABs for the Astros over this stretch, the catcher has 13 hits for four RBIs, and five runs whilst batting .333 with a .366 OBP. He’s performed even better over the last seven games where Vazquez has recorded eight hits, three RBIs, and four runs for a .421 BA and a .476 OBP. Vazquez is available in approximately 40% of fantasy baseball leagues as a free agent and has probably been one of the most efficient catchers hitting the ball over the last few weeks.

2B Jonathan India, Cincinnati Reds (72.27% Owned)

After an awesome rookie season in 2021, injuries have prevented India from putting up as big numbers as he did last year. Jonathan India missed all of May and half of June due to injury. So far, he’s played in 70 games for the Reds this season batting .253 for 68 hits, eight home runs, and 28 RBIs. He’s played better over the last 30 games, as he’s recorded 32 hits for 13 RBIs on a .283 BA. Over the last seven games, the sophomore second-baseman has batted .346 for a .452 OBP. He’s also recorded at least one hit in each of the last 10 games for the reds, and has as a result been producing more FPTS than usual over the last few weeks. Though he is only available in approximately 25% of fantasy baseball leagues at the moment, fantasy owners should check their waiver wire to see if India is available to pick up. Though the Reds have no postseason hopes in 2022, India, whose season was interrupted, will try to finish his season as strong as possible.

3B Brendan Donovan, St. Louis Cardinals (27.78% Owned)

Rookie third baseman Brendan Donovan is having a strong season for the St. Louis Cardinals. Donovan is batting .299 in his first year for 86 hits and 35 RBIs. He’s also got a solid OBP of .404 and has recorded 42 runs this season. As the Cardinals keep cruising into the postseason, Donovan should keep playing and continue to hit efficiently in his first year.

SS David Fletcher, Los Angeles Angels (31.15% Owned)

Over the last 30 games, Fletcher has been hitting much better than he had in his first 10 games of this season. In 116 ABs throughout this stretch, Fletcher has recorded 37 hits for two home runs, and 14 RBIs for a .319 BA and a .358 OBP. Fletcher has only played in 41 games for the Angels so far this season after missing most of May and the entire month of June before returning for just three games at the end of July. However, Fletcher has been healthy since and has played in virtually every game for the Angels since returning. Though he hit the ball inefficiently in April and in early May, Fletcher has returned much stronger and his batting is doing all the talking. He’s available in just less than 70% of fantasy baseball leagues at the moment.

OF Mark Canha, New York Mets (66.67% Owned)

For the Mets, outfielder Mark Canha is having a great season. He is batting a career-high .278 for 87 hits, 10 homers, and 50 RBIs. Over the last 15 games, he’s batted .364 for 16 hits, three home runs, and 13 RBIs. He’s quietly generated an OBP of .453 and a .750 SLG% throughout this stretch. As the Mets move into the postseason, Mark Canha will continue to hit at a solid pace to help the Mets further cement their position as the top dog coming out of the National League this season.
