Week 14 Fantasy Baseball Trade Value Charts: Clayton Kershaw Criminally Undervalued

Will Desvallees Jul 14th 3:08 PM EDT.

Clayton Kershaw may be one of the most sought-after pitchers in fantasy baseball as we gear up for the second half of the MLB season. We are approaching the All-Star Game and the trade deadline in most fantasy baseball leagues is only a few weeks away. If you want to improve your roster through a blockbuster trade, now is the time to start chatting up your fellow league-mates.

The 2022 fantasy baseball season has had a little bit of everything including a ton of big surprises. Several superstars are underperforming while many young players have come out of nowhere to produce massive campaigns. As we gear up for the weekend in Week 14 of the fantasy baseball season, let’s identify a few potential players to consider selling high as well as a few players to consider targeting at a discounted price.

Fantasy Baseball Players To Sell High In Week 14

SP Sandy Alcantara, Miami Marlins (20.49)

Sandy Alcantara has been pitching superbly this season and no one can take that away from him. In eight of his last 10 starts, the Marlins pitcher has produced a minimum of 20 FPTS. This season, he’s chuffed up a 7-3 record and is currently sitting at an extremely impressive 1.84 ERA. Still, his value has skyrocketed to the point that you can consider shopping him for other pitchers and perhaps a little something extra. There is a very real chance that Alcantra starts the All-Star Game for the National League. If that’s the case, his value may inflate, even more, presenting you with a very sneaky sell-high trade opportunity,

At the moment, pitchers Carlos Rodon (19.27), Gerrit Cole (19.53), and Zack Wheeler (17.06) are three elite pitchers all having strong seasons who you could consider acquiring in exchange for Alcantara. Cole is the best of the four options and I’d send Alcantra for Cole any day of the week. It’s doubtful that Alcantara improves on his current numbers, as his current pace is not sustainable. At the very least, expect him to have a few rough outings in his upcoming starts, especially since he pitches in one of this year’s toughest divisions, the National League East. He has to face the New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, and Philadelphia Phillies quite a bit.

If you are feeling super creative, you could try to acquire a package of Clayton Kershaw (12.69) or Nestor Cortes (12.27) packaged with a player whose trade value is 10 such as SS Gleybor Torres (9.12) or 1B Jose Abreu (10.07) in exchange for Alcantara, who is less than one point away from his season-high trade value of 21. I would absolutely send Alcantra and Johnathan India to another fantasy owner for Clayton Kershaw and Jose Abreu. You should consider a similar trade if you own Alcantra.

SP Shane McClanahan, Tampa Bay Rays (25.16)

McClanahan hasn't lost a start in a month and is expected to potentially start the All-Star Game for the American League. With his 10-3 record, 1.71 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, and 147 strikeouts, McCalahan seems destined to start in his first All-Star Game. However, no pitcher ranks higher on the Trade Value Charts than McClanahan so the question remains whether this kid can continue to pitch at this rate or whether we’ll see a regression to the mean. Fantasy owners can get a ton for this year’s top-ranked pitcher, especially since he’s tossed at least six innings in five consecutive outings and hasn’t allowed more than a single run in any of those matchups. McClanahan’s value has never been this high (third-highest rating at any position) so now may be the time to move him for a Justin Verlander or another strong starter, plus an upgrade at the closer position. Consider the deal below.

Fantasy Baseball Players To Buy Low In Week 14

1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Toronto Blue Jays (15.66)

As opposed to last season where Guerrerp batted .311 with 188 hits and 48 home runs, he’s only batting .266 through 87 games in 2022. Still, he is hitting at a great pace this season, as he’s already accumulated 88 hits, 54 RBIs, and 19 homers. While he may not finish the season with numbers as noteworthy as last season’s, his trade value has dropped far too low given his immense upside. Specifically, he’s struggled through the last seven games after having a strong second half to June and early July. Through this stretch, he’s only had one RBI in 27 plate appearances. This has dropped his trade value by -1.8 points over the last week. He is now valued at 14.66, down from his season-high mark of approximately 28 points on the Trade Value Charts. Early in the season, he was fantasy baseball’s top-ranked first baseman. That’s no longer the case and he’s dropped to seventh in his position. First basemen Anthony Rizzo (16.29) and C.J. Cron (16.15) are both having great seasons, but ultimately they won’t finish with the numbers Guerrero Jr. will by the end of the season. As a result, consider trading away Rizzo or Cron in exchange for the Blue Jays’ phenom heading into Week 15 of the fantasy baseball season.

OF Taylor Ward, Los Angeles Angels (14.27)

Taylor Ward’s trade value dropped by a staggering -3.9 points over the last week. He is now valued at just about 14 after peaking at 31 earlier this season. Over the last seven games, Ward has simply stunk. In 23 at-bats over this most recent stretch, Ward has only tallied four hits and one RBI. These numbers are not representative of Ward’s efficiency as he is still having a great season. Now into his fifth year in the big leagues, the Angels outfielder is hitting .291 with 68 hits, 12 homers, and 34 RBIs. He’s also racked up 42 runs this season and maintained a solid OBP of .384. Ward’s value has dropped substantially as a result of his bad hitting over the last two weeks. He’s amidst a mini-slump and is clearly a trade target to buy low in Week 14.

SP Alek Manoah, Toronto Blue Jays (15.28)

In his second year in the MLB, Alek Manoah has put together a record of 9-4 with a 2.34 ERA. He has thrown 90-110 pitches roughly in all but three games this season. While Manoah isn’t the flashiest pitcher, he consistently produces. In five of the last eight games, Manoah has generated 18+ FPTS. This season, he peaked at 22 points on the Trade Value Charts. This could be a good opportunity to acquire Manoah who has proven himself in his sophomore season and drastically improved.

OF J.D. Martinez, Boston Red Sox (12.56)

Martinez has been running hot as of late. Over the last seven games, he’s recorded 11 hits and five RBIs with a batting average of .379. In comparison, Martinez recorded just 29 hits and 15 RBIs over 119 plate appearances in the last 30 games. While he’s batted .379 over his last seven, he’s batted just .244 through his last 30 games, which explains why his trade value has dipped this summer. However, Martinez climbed +1.7 points in the Trade Value Charts this week as a result of his better play in early July. As we head into the second half of the season, expect Martinez to improve his power numbers at the plate. Since he peaked at a season-high trade value of approximately 21 points, Martinez is still undervalued.

SP Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (13.04)

Clayton Kershaw has been one of the best pitchers in baseball for more than a decade. In 11 games played for the Dodgers this season, Kershaw has earned the Los Angeles six wins and two losses while sporting a 2.34 ERA and 0.98 WHIP on the season. Part of the reason his value has dropped so much is because of a horrific outing he had on June 28 against the Colorado Rockies. That night, he walked four batters and allowed six runs for a total of -6 FPTS on the night. For Kershaw, nights like these are absolutely rare. Since that game, Kershaw has had two starts in which he produced 23 and 30 FPTS respectively. In his last two outings, Kershaw has thrown 14.2 innings of one-run ball while striking out 18 batters and issuing just one free pass.

In 65.2 innings pitched this season, Kershaw has struck out 69 batters. This means that he’s striking out 9.8 hitters every nine innings this season, and therefore striking out more batters than innings pitched. He’s been elected to the All-Star game again in 2022, and there is simply no reason for him to have fallen this low on the Trade Value Charts. At the moment, there is a handful of starting pitchers with similar trade values to Kershaw who won’t finish nearly as high in the pitcher rankings. Logan Gilbert (12.59), Tyler Anderson (12.79), and even Nick Pivetta (15.13) are all ranked right around Kershaw. If you own Kershaw, you shouldn’t trade him unless you are absolutely ripping off your leaguemate.
