Going from the No. 3 seed and a close matchup with a Steph Curry-led Golden State Warriors squad in the Western Conference Playoffs to a spot on the couch and — as the joke goes, Cancun — isn't a transition any NBA team aspires to experience, especially with a young team. Unfortunately for the Sacramento Kings, that's where they sit after just two games of this year's first round. Interestingly enough, the stark difference from Mike Brown's squad's position doesn't have anything to do with record. Last season, the Kings put together a 48-win season, and this year 46.

The most notable move the Kings made last summer was bringing in reigning EuroLeague MVP Sasha Vezenkov , signing the Bulgarian forward to a three-year deal worth nearly $20 million. Vezenkov was drafted by the Brooklyn Nets in the late second round of the 2017 NBA Draft but made his NBA debut six years later for the Kings. In his rookie season,
After a 2022-23 season that saw them reach the playoffs amid a buzz of fan excitement, the Sacramento Kings sputtered out of the NBA Play-In Tournament this season. The Kings won 46 games this season—just two fewer than they did a year ago. Fox and Sabonis were just as electrifying. The roster was largely the same, albeit dented by late-season injuries to Malik Monk and Kevin Huerter.
Mike Brown has brought plenty of success to Sacramento since he became Kings coach, snapping the team's 16-season NBA playoff drought and providing a sense of stability for the franchise. Brown's four-year contract he signed ahead of the 2022-23 NBA season includes a mutual option for the fourth season, The Athletic's Sam Amick and Anthony Slater reported Monday, citing league sources, putting the Kings coach in extension territory.

A cascade of awards was coming: All-NBA for De'Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis, Coach of the Year for Mike Brown, Executive of the Year for Monte McNair. With every win, a brilliant torrent of purple light would shoot into the Sacramento skies.
