Pirates placed RHP George Kontos on the 10-day disabled list with a right groin strain. Kontos has made just five appearances for the Pirates since they claimed him off waivers from the Giants on August 5. [...]
TORONTO - The story of how Pirates right-hander George Kontos came to know Toronto Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ, who will start Sunday against his former teammates at Rogers Centre, is a simple one. They pitched together at Northwestern University in 2004. How Kontos landed at Northwestern, however, is a longer and inarguably more compelling narrative.
The last time the Giants sent George Kontos to get them out of a jam, Marcus Semien ripped his third pitch for a go-ahead grand slam. That sequence on July 31 was in the back of Kontos' mind when he took the moun at Rogers Centre in the seventh inning Friday night.

Pittsburgh recalled left-hander Steven Brault and right-handers Edgar Santana and Johnny Barbato before Tuesday night's game against the Dodgers at PNC Park. The Pirates optioned right-hander Dovydas Neverauskas to Indianapolis and placed right-handers George Kontos (right groin strain) and Joaquin Benoit (left knee inflammation) on the 10-day disabled list.
Spin: Kontos' stint is retroactive to Sunday, and he doesn't expect to spend more than the mandatory 10 days on the DL. After being unable to pitch on Sunday night, Kontos began warming up in the 10th inning on Monday and decided he still didn't feel well enough to take the mound. Kontos said he has never dealt with this type of injury before, and he still felt "a little sore" on Tuesday. He was examined by a doctor on Monday night and said his strength and flexibility checked out fine. It is unclear how Benoit sustained his injury, but he pitched two innings on Monday night for the first time since last June. Neverauskas worked each of the past three games, the first time in his professional career he'd pitched three consecutive games, so he would not have been available for the next two or three days. He figures to return after Major League rosters expand from 25 to 40 players on Sept. 1.
