Royals right-hander Edinson Volquez won after giving up two unearned runs on three hits and one walk with two strikeouts over five innings Thursday against the Marlins.
Spin: Volquez was sharp on Thursday, bringing his ERA down to 4.88 from 5.04 with the solid outing. The 33-year-old has been better than his surface stats suggest, with a 4.38 FIP and 4.43 xFIP through 156 2/3 innings of work thus far. He's also done well to log a 53 percent ground-ball rate, the best mark of his career since 2010. As a result, he's a quietly serviceable streamer for deep-league owners for his next scheduled start on Aug. 30 against the Yankees at home.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Edinson Volquez had focused between starts on doing better in the first inning.Things didn't quite pan out as Volquez allowed four of his eight runs in the opening inning of the Kansas City Royals' 12-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night."I've really struggled the first inning in my last couple outings," Volquez said. "Me and (pitching coach) Dave (Eiland) tried something different tonight to take that away, but it didn't work."
