Marlins trade Hechavarria to Rays

Posted 9 hrs ago. via mlb.com

The Marlins traded slick-fielding shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria to the Rays for outfielder Braxton Lee and right-hander Ethan Clark on Monday.

Spin: Hechavarria became expendable because the Marlins are committed to giving JT Riddle every opportunity to be their regular shortstop.Regarded as one of the top defensive shortstops in the game, Hechavarria was a National League Gold Glove Award finalist twice. In 2015-16, he had 18 Defensive Runs Saved at his position. But twice this season, Hechavarria has been on the 10-day disabled list with a left oblique strain. He missed time with the oblique issue in April, and he injured his side again on May 9. Hechavarria has been on the DL since May 10, and he has been on rehab assignment with Class A Advanced Jupiter. He should be available to join the Rays at any time.

Rays to deal for Hechavarria

Posted 12 hrs ago. via mlb.com

The Rays made a proactive move on Monday by trading two Minor Leaguers to the Marlins for shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria.

Spin: Two Major League sources have told MLB.com's Joe Frisaro that a deal is forthcoming, pending medical evaluations. Frisaro reports the players likely to return to the Marlins are outfielder Braxton Lee and right-hander Ethan Clark. Matt Duffy was expected to be the Rays' shortstop this season, but he's yet to play this season. Duffy has struggled to return from left heel surgery, and last week he had another procedure to remove a calcium deposit from the area that has continued to give him pain. The 28-year-old Hechavarria is hitting .277/.288/.385 in just 20 games this season. He is a career .255/.291/.337 hitter with 15 home runs over parts of six seasons.

Adeiny Hechavarria Reportedly Traded to Rays for Braxton Lee, Ethan Clark

Posted 13 hrs ago. via

Adeiny Hechavarria will get a fresh start with a new team after the Tampa Bay Rays acquired the shortstop in a trade with the Miami Marlins.According to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, the Marlins will receive minor-leaguers Braxton Lee and Ethan Clark in return.Hechavarria has been on the disabled list since the beginning of May with an oblique strain, but he hit .277 in 20 games before the injury. He is expected to return shortly after completing a rehab assignment. While the 28-year-old is coming off a disappointing season in which he hit just .236 with three home runs, he had been better in the past and owns a .255 career batting average. He also plays above-average defense at a premium position. That is what caused a bidding war for the shortstop over the past couple of days. According to Joe Frisaro of MLB.com, four teams were involved in talks for Hechavarria, including the St. Louis Cardinals and Baltimore Orioles. He should earn immediate playing time with the Rays because of injuries to infielders Matt Duffy and Brad Miller. Hechavarria will also have next season to prove himself before he becomes a free agent.Meanwhile, the Marlins will give JT Riddle a chance to stick at shortstop. Lee plays center fielder and is hitting .318/.387/.391 in Double-A, while Clark, a right-handed pitcher, owns a 3.11 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in Single-A.Read more MLB news on BleacherReport.com

The worst-kept trade secret is baseball is reportedly now a done deal: The Miami Marlins are sending shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria north to the Tampa Bay Rays, a sign that baseball’s trade season has started and the Marlins are among the sellers.

The trade has been talked about since Friday, when Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan reported that the Marlins were looking for suitors for Hechavarria, a 28-year-old from Cuba who is great with his glove but not so much with his bat. He’s hitting .277 this season, though, which is better than his career .255 average
