It’s a long way from here to September for the Dolphins, and it will probably be mid-August before any decisions are made in regard to paring what is now a list of 12 receivers down to the four or five that will make the 53-man roster. But that doesn’t mean head coach Joe Philbin, receivers coach Ken O’Keefe and the rest of the offensive staff aren’t already into their evaluations as their on-field work cranks into high gear the next few weeks.

Figuring returning regulars Davone Bess and Brian Hartline are sure bets, that leaves 10 candidates vying for two or, at the most, three spots. The fact three tight ends are all but sure to make the roster _ Anthony Fasano, Charles Clay and rookie Michael Egnew are all no-brainers _ will make it difficult if not impossible to keep a spot for a non-performer, as was the case with Clyde Gates last year. While Gates was valuable returning kickoffs, he wound up with just two catches for 19 yards

I'm headed out to the Baltimore Ravens' organized team activities (a long word for voluntary minicamp). The coaches and players will be coming off the field around 1:30 p.m., so I have to push back our weekly chat to Thursday at 2 p.m.This will be the first time that reporters will see the Ravens full team on the field since that AFC championship debacle. My guess is this workout will go smoother because Lee Evans is no longer on the team and Billy Cundiff only misses field goals outside the state of Maryland.
