The team will likely have to absorb most of the $23 million remaining on his contract. He requested a trade last March and again around the All-Star break and has had numerous discussions with general manager Tony Reagins, who appears willing to accommodate Matthews' request. The Angels have two outfield spots open due to free agency, but Matthews still wants out. http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Gary_Matthews/606408 606408 Wed, 28 Oct 2009 8:24:02 EDT kffl.com http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Gary_Matthews/606408 Matthews wants to leave Angels Gary Matthews Jr. is ready to leave the Angels after serving a reduced role in 2009, according to the Los Angeles Times. He said, "I do not expect to be back; it is time to move on. I am ready to play for an organization that wants me to play every day. This organization has other plans, and that is OK."

Our View: Matthews inked a five-year deal worth $50MM in 2007, but was hindered by a knee injury over the second half of that season. He had surgery on the knee last winter, which led to the club reeling in star Torii Hunter. Matthews has $23MM left on his contract with a no-trade clause that will allow him to block deals to four teams of his choosing.

Angels | Matthews doesn't expect to return Mike DiGiovanna, of the Los Angeles Times, reports Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Gary Matthews Jr. does not expect to return to the team despite having two years left on his contract. "I don't expect to be back; it's time to move on," Matthews said. "I'm ready to play for an organization that wants me to play every day. This organization has other plans, and that's OK." Matthews has $23 million remaining on his contract and a no-trade clause that will let him block a trade to four teams of his choosing. http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Gary_Matthews/605768 605768 Tue, 27 Oct 2009 17:44:02 EDT kffl.com http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Gary_Matthews/605768 Superb pitching seals Yankees' destiny as AL champs It was 12:01 AM when the clock struck midnight for the Los Angeles Angels. It is, of course, somewhat ridiculous to cast a club with the game's seventh-highest payroll, and one that won the second-most games in the majors during the regular season, in a Cinderella role. But the Angels' payroll of $116.7 million is just 56 percent of the Yankees', and the 97 games they won were six fewer than the Yankees, and even as they won, by one run apiece, two of the three games in Anaheim to narrow the Yankees' ALCS lead to 3-2, there was a sense that if the Angels were somehow able to win two in a row and take the series, it would be a shocking, almost historic accomplishment. Not the equivalent of the Red Sox' recovery from a 3-0 deficit to win the 2004 ALCS, perhaps, but something close to it. But then Mariano Rivera struck out Gary Matthews Jr. with an 89 mile-per-hour fastball one minute after Sunday had become Monday, and the Angels, slipperless, flew home to California for the winter. http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Gary_Matthews/603126 603126 Mon, 26 Oct 2009 2:52:01 EDT Ben Reiter http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Gary_Matthews/603126 Angels | Rivera was nearly benched The Los Angeles Times' Mike DiGiovanna reports Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Juan Rivera was nearly benched in favor of OF Gary Matthews Jr. in Game 5 of the ALCS because Rivera was just 2-for-20 in the series. http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Gary_Matthews/598280 598280 Fri, 23 Oct 2009 8:24:01 EDT kffl.com http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Gary_Matthews/598280 Angels | Matthews helps make history The Los Angeles Times reports Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Gary Matthews Jr. recorded his 50th RBI Saturday, Oct. 3, giving the Angels 11 players with 50 or more RBIs. That is the first time this has happened in team history. http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Gary_Matthews/566608 566608 Mon, 05 Oct 2009 2:32:01 EDT kffl.com http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Gary_Matthews/566608 Vlad gets Wednesday off Vladimir Guerrero got a day-off on Wednesday. Bob Abreu served as the DH, while Gary Matthews Jr. played in right field.

Our View: Vlad was just getting a routine day-off today, mainly because it was a day game. He should be back when the Angels return to the field.
