Our View: Wood is owed $10.5 million next season and has an $11 million dollar vesting option in 2011 if he closes out 55 games next year (a mark he will not likely reach). The Indians would like to unload Wood's salary and move young, affordable flamethrower Chris Perez into the full-time closer spot, but in a closer-rich offseason they may have a hard time finding someone interested in Wood. Let alone someone willing to eat his monster salary.

The bone is known as an "os trigonum," and is present in a small portion of the population. "It doesn't really affect me at all on the field," Perez said. "It's more off-the-field stuff - running, weightlifting, stuff like that. It's not serious. It's like two weeks of keeping off of it (after surgery), and then another two or three weeks of rehabbing, and I should be good to start up again." The surgery will be performed by Dr. James Sferra at the Cleveland Clinic. http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Chris_Perez/564892 564892 Sun, 04 Oct 2009 13:48:01 EDT kffl.com http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Chris_Perez/564892 The bone is known as an "os trigonum" and is found only in a small portion of people. The surgery isn't considered serious and the reliever should be ready to go for Spring Training in 2010. "It doesn't really affect me at all on the field," Perez said. "It's more off-the-field stuff -- running, weightlifting, stuff like that." Perez explained he'll keep weight off the ankle for two weeks after surgery, which will be followed by two to three weeks of rehab. The ankle had bothered Perez for much of the '09 campaign, during which he went 1-2 with two saves in five chances, a 4.20 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP and 67 Ks in 55 2/3 innings. He's a candidate for the closer role next year if the Indians are able to move Kerry Wood. http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Chris_Perez/564887 564887 Sun, 04 Oct 2009 13:40:17 EDT mlb.com http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Chris_Perez/564887 Perez to have surgery Wednesday MLB.com is reporting that Indians' reliever Chris Perez will undergo ankle surgery on Wednesday. Perez needs an extra bone removed that has formed in his left foot.

Our View: Perez is expected to be recovered in time for spring training next season, and he could compete for the closer's role if Kerry Wook doesn't come back. Perez looks like a future closer, but he will need to show some consistency to win the job.

St. Louis Cardinals going all out to win it in 2009 The majority of e-mails and text messages that poured in from general managers and baseball officials Friday could be summed up by this comment from a GM: "The Cardinals emptied their farm system for three months of Mark DeRosa and two months of Matt Holliday."DeRosaHolliday The price to win this season is high. The Cardinals still owe Cleveland a top pitching prospect (right-hander Jess Todd?) besides righty Chris Perez in the DeRosa deal.
