According to Phil Rodgers of the Chicago Tribune, the Milwaukee Brewers might be reluctant to trade infield prospect Mat Gamel this winter. Gamel became expendable after the breakout year by Casey McGehee.

Our View: Gamel is a power-hitting lefty who has a ton of potential, but the team is set on the infield with McGehee, Ricky Weeks, and Alcides Escobar. They might not want to trade him, but it makes sense to include him in a package if they want to get an impact arm.

Hardy.

Our View: Part of the Johan Santana deal, Gomez is a defensive whiz, as well, but hit just .248 in his two seasons in Minnesota. His arrival almost certainly spells the end of the Mike Cameron era, and the beginning of the Alcides Escobar one.

Hardy dealt to Twins Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports the the Brewers have traded shortstop J.J. Hardy to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for outfielder Carlos Gomez.

Our View: This move makes a ton of sense for the Brewers. With Alcides Escobar ready to take over at shortstop, and the Brewers thin in the outfield, Hardy was a perfect piece to trade away after he was benched and even demoted last season.

He finished the 2009 campaign with 125 at-bats, and combined with his at-bats from the 2008 season, he has 129 at-bats at the major league level. Our View: To be considered a rookie, a player must have both fewer than 130 major league at-bats, and "accumulated no more than 45 days on the active roster of a major league club during the period of 25-player limit (before September call-ups." Escobar is just one at-bat short of 130 for his career, so he barely made the cut-off. After batting .304 in his 125 2009 at-bats (he had four in 2008), he will likely be a front-runner for the 2010 National League Rookie of the Year award.
