FantasySP / MLB / Adam Wainwright http://www.fantasysp.com/mlb_player_news/Adam_Wainwright FantasySP / MLB / Adam Wainwright Copyright 2009 649299 Lincecum keeps the Cy Young Despite not receiving the most first place votes, or even the most second place votes, Tim Lincecum has officially won his second straight National League Cy Young award. St. Louis' Chris Carpenter finished second, while Adam Wainwright finished third.

Our View: It was one of the closest votes in the history of the award. While either Carpenter or Wainwright bested Lincecum in many key categories, including wins, innings pitched, ERA and WHIP, Lincecum posted the league's most strikeouts, complete games, shutouts, strikeouts per nine innings and best strikeout-to-walk ratio. Congratulations to Lincecum on becoming the first pitcher in either league to win the award in consecutive seasons since Randy Johnson won four straight from 1999-2002.

Lincecum takes home second straight Cy Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated reports that Tim Lincecum has been named the winner of the 2009 National League Cy Young award. It is his second straight.

Our View: He beat out the Cardinals' pair of aces, Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter. His 15 wins are the fewest ever for a staring pitcher to win the Cy Young. His 261 strikeouts led the National League, while his 2.48 ERA was second to Carpenter's 2.24.

Our View: No huge surprises here, although Hudson struggled to find playing time for the Dodgers in the second half of the season. Cardinals' shortstop Brendan Ryan could have an argument at short, but Rollins finished with a ML best .990 fielding percentage.

Wainwright was 19-8 with a 2.63 ERA this season.

Our View: Waino was selected by his peers as the top pitcher in the NL, and this award is usually a good indication of who will win the Cy Young. It's a three-horse race in the NL, and now Wainwright looks to have a leg up on Tim Lincecum and teammate Chris Carpenter.

Cardinals | Wainwright wins Players Choice Award Bob Dutton, of The Kansas City Star, reports St. Louis Cardinals SP Adam Wainwright was voted the top pitcher in the National League for the 2009 Players Choice Awards. http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Adam_Wainwright/606795 606795 Wed, 28 Oct 2009 13:20:01 EDT kffl.com http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Adam_Wainwright/606795 Duncan likely returning to Cards Dave Duncan will likely return as pitching coach of the St. Louis Cardinals in 2010 if manager Tony La Russa decides to come back, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Our View: "My inclination is not to go somewhere else," he said. There had been rumors that 2009 would be Duncan's last season in St. Louis after he became very publicly upset at the treatment and subsequent trading of his outfielder son Chris from the Cardinals. Those bad feelings appear to have dissipated, however, and Duncan says he has a good working relationship with Cards general manager John Mozeliak. His return would be great news for the likes of Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright, and surely ensure that both would again be Cy Young candidates in 2010.

My final ballots for major awards Albert Pujols, Joe Mauer and Zack Greinke should be shoo-ins for the NL MVP, AL MVP and AL Cy Young awards, respectively. Chris Carpenter gets the call here in a tight race for NL Cy Young, as he led that league in both winning percentage and ERA. Adam Wainwright and Tim Lincecum aren't terrible choices, either, but the goals, after all, are to win the greatest percentage of games and allow the fewest runs. That's Carpenter. http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Adam_Wainwright/581458 581458 Tue, 13 Oct 2009 13:28:01 EDT Jon Heyman http://www.fantasysp.com/player/mlb/Adam_Wainwright/581458 La Russa uncertain about future USA Today reports that Cardinals manager Tony La Russa is undecided about returning to the Cardinals next season. La Russa admitted he just started thinking about it following Saturday's loss to the Dodgers that eliminated his team from the postseason.

Our View: GM John Mozeliak does not seem in any hurry to get him out of town, so this decision will likely come down to La Russa. Given that the Cards have a core of Albert Pujols, Chris Carpenter, and Adam Wainwright locked up, it seems a good bet that TLR will return.

Carpenter could start Game 4 of NLDS MLB.com reports that the Cardinals may pitch ace Chris Carpenter on short rest if they can force a Game 4 against the Dodgers in the NLDS.

Our View: Carp looked off his game in the series opener, but would likely be much better the second time around, as he rarely ever has two rough outings in a row. The Cards trail 2-0 in the series, but if they can muster a win at home in Game 3, Carp would take the hill the next day, followed by co-ace Adam Wainwright in Game 5. Nothing against postseason hero John Smoltz, but the Cards are likely to pull out all the stops and go with their big guns as often as they can.
