Updating previous items, The Newark Star-Ledger is reporting New York Mets OF Daniel Murphy (hamstring) was told on Nov. 20 that he has a Grade 2 Strain of the right hamstring. Murphy felt discomfort in the leg in pre-game batting practice of his Nov. 11 Arizona Fall League game. He will skip winter league ball in Puerto Rico so that he can be ready for spring training.

The South Florida SunSentinel reports the Florida Marlins have told SS Hanley Ramirez (shoulder) he cannot play winter ball. Ramirez's surgically repaired shoulder was bothering him in September, and the Marlins want him to rest it as much as possible, especially with him slated to play for his native country in the World Baseball Classic next March.

Jeff Zrebiec, of The Baltimore Sun, is reporting a grievance arbitrator will finally decide how much money -- if any -- the Baltimore Orioles owe free-agent SP Sidney Ponson (Yankees). Orioles general counsel Russell Smouse confirmed the grievance between the organization and Ponson would start being heard Dec. 17 in Baltimore by arbitrator Shyam Das. The hearing could take several days and there is no definitive timetable for Das to render a decision once it ends.

Yankees purchased the contracts of RHP Christian Garcia, RHP Anthony Claggett, RHP Steven Jackson and LHP Michael Dunn. Odd choices from the Bombers. If we were limited to four players, we would have gone with relief prospects Kevin Whelan and J.B. Cox over Jackson and Garcia. Jackson, a product of the Randy Johnson trade, couldn't cut it as a starter and doesn't have nearly Whelan's upside as a reliever. Garcia has talent, but he's battled arm problems and is still pretty far away. Also being left available is Alan Horne, who underwent rotator cuff surgery.

Mets purchased the contract of first baseman Mike Carp. The Mets lack minor league depth, so they've opted to protect just one additional player from the Rule 5 draft. Carp, 22, hit .299/.403/.471 in Double-A last season. His defense is an issue and he'll likely never hit lefties well enough to become a full-time player in the majors, but he's an underrated prospect.

Reds purchased the contracts of LHP Matt Maloney, RHP Carlos Fisher, RHP Robert Manuel and RHP Sam Lecure to their 40-man roster on Thursday. Maloney is a definite candidate to spend considerable time in Cincinnati's rotation next season, and Fisher and Manuel could be bullpen candidates as the year goes on. Lecure is likely a year away from becoming a bottom-of-the-rotation possibility.

Braves purchased the contracts of RHP Stephen Marek, RHP Todd Redmond and INF Diory Hernandez. Former top prospect Eric Campbell is being left available. Marek, a product of the Mark Teixeira deal, is easily the best bet of this group. Redmond is going to have a difficult time making it as a back-of-the-rotation starter, and Hernandez looks like he'll be a weak choice as a utilityman.

News: The World Series champion Phillies and the Rangers swapped former first-round picks Thursday. Texas acquired outfielder Greg Golson from the Phillies for outfielder John Mayberry.

Analysis: Mayberry, drafted 19th overall by the Rangers in 2005, hit .263 with 16 homers and 58 RBI in 114 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City this year. He has some upside, but he likely won't make an impact in Fantasy this season. Expect him to go undrafted

News: The Rangers designated right-handed pitcher Kameron Loe for assignment Thursday in anticipation of selling his rights to a team in Japan. The 6-foot-7 Loe, who wants to be a starter, made 14 relief appearances during five stints with Texas this season. "We were prepared to have Kam come back and compete for a spot in the bullpen if this hadn't presented itself," general manager Jon Daniels said. "It's a good opportunity for him, not only financially, but for him to start."

Analysis: Loe wasn't a disaster as a major-league reliever, but he didn't do enough statistically to have any Fantasy appeal. He obviously won't have any appeal if he goes to Japan
