Now they're going into college basketball's hall of fame together.Bird and Johnson were inducted into the National Collegiate Hall of Fame on Sunday in Kansas City. The honor comes 30 years after Johnson's Michigan State team beat Bird and Indiana State in a game that reshaped college basketball. http://www.fantasysp.com/news/cbb/195217/bird,_magic_inducted_into_college_hall_together 195217 Sun, 22 Nov 2009 13:54:02 EDT foxsports.com http://www.fantasysp.com/news/cbb/195217/bird,_magic_inducted_into_college_hall_together Larry Bird, Magic Johnson inducted into college basketball hall of fame together Larry Bird and Magic Johnson have been linked since their epic 1979 NCAA title game. Only four Pac-10 teams remain unbeaten, compared to 14 out of 16 in the Big East.Saturday's debacle left Pac-10 with a 23-10 overall record. Entering Sunday, no other BCS conference had won fewer than 74 percent of its games. The Pac-10's .697 percentage was not as good as the Atlantic 10 (.718). In fact, in its historically poor 2008-09 season, the SEC had a .738 percentage on Selection Sunday. But all is not lost for the Pac-10. Yet.Hope rests in three areas:1. Arizona in Maui. The Wildcats begin their Maui Invitational adventure against Wisconsin in a game that should tip off late Monday night/early Tuesday morning Eastern Time. The young Wildcats might not be ready for an opponent with such a precise attack, but there is a toughness to this team that might allow it some success in the three-day tournament.2. Arizona State in NYC. Herb Sendek's surprisingly potent Sun Devils wouldn't seem ready to handle Duke in Wednesday's semifinal of the NIT Season Tip-Off, but Connecticut and LSU haven't shown enough to date to make a consolation victory impossible.3. The Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series. Lined up in proper order and matched on neutral courts, the Big 12 probably would annihilate the Pac-10. But the way the games are matched—starting Sunday, Nov. 29 with USC playing host to Nebraska—gives the Pac-10 at least a puncher's chance for a split. If the Pac-10 fails to get some attractive results in these events, it might find itself at least flirting with one-bid status. The rest of the week ahead:Player to watchDevin Ebanks, PF, West Virginia, in 76 Classic starting Thursday. That's if we get to watch him, of course. The Mountaineers are in a field that includes Clemson, Minnesota, Butler and UCLA, but they'll be out of luck if Ebanks hasn't returned to the team by then. WVU has declined to identify what personal matters Ebanks is handling, but it's beyond rare for such a high-profile player to be absent this long.Must-see TVCincinnati vs. Vanderbilt, 5:30 p.m. Monday. These might be the Maui Invitational's two best teams, and they're playing in the first round. That's what happens when one of these early tournaments is seeded by brand, not potential. Too bad for the Bearcats and Commodores. Great for us.MismatchTexas vs. Iowa, O'Reilly Auto Parts CBE Classic, 9:45 p.m. Monday. In what might be called "the Gardner-Webb decision," the fine folks at the Gazelle Group, which promotes several early season tournaments, decided to set championship-round matchups rather than have them established though elimination at on-campus sites. Iowa might have sold more tickets in Kansas City than Duquesne would have, but the Dukes are better.Saving you from the LionsESPN's new taste for Thanksgiving Day basketball means you have alternative programming choices when the NFL serves up Green Bay-Detroit at 12:30 p.m. How about an Old Spice Classic doubleheader of Creighton vs. Michigan (noon) followed by Marquette vs. Xavier on ESPN2? That ought to keep you occupied until the turkey is on the table.Mike DeCourcy is a writer for Sporting News.
