Taveras finishing season on bench
News: From The Sports Xchange notes: Center fielder Willy Taveras, out of the lineup for a month with a strained right quadriceps, came off the disabled list Tuesday, but it doesn't sound as if he'll be playing much the rest of the season. In fact, manager Dusty Baker used the name Wally Pipp when talking about Taveras, who was replaced in the lineup by rookie Drew Stubbs. Over the last 32 games, Stubbs leads the team in home runs (eight), total bases (67), steals (seven) and runs scored (21), so Baker isn't likely to remove Stubbs. 'Sometimes Wally Pipp is still alive,' Baker said. Pipp was a first baseman for the New York Yankees and took a day off. He was replaced by Lou Gehrig, who then played 2,130 straight games, and Pipp was never heard from again as a Yankee. [...]
