MIAMI It is too soon to tell whether moving to first base while Gaby Sanchez tries to find his swing in the minors will help or hinder Logan Morrison’s knees.
Soreness in the right knee that was surgically repaired in December kept him out of the lineup for much of spring training and has necessitated some rest days.
Some assume that having less ground to cover at first than in left field will be easier on Morrison’s knees. Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen said the opposite may be true because at “first base, every pitch you’re moving. Lateral. Back and forth. In and out. There is a lot of moving there.â€
Morrison (knee) got a start at first base Sunday, going 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.
Spin: Gaby Sanchez's demotion has opened the door for Morrison to get some work at first base, which will not only provide him with extra position flexibility but should also save some wear and tear on his knee if he doesn't have to run around in the outfield. Given that he was never a very good defensive outfielder to begin with, if his bat heats up it could be very tough for the Marlins to justify bringing Sanchez back up and moving Morrison back to left field.
Logan Morrison played almost every game at first base during his six seasons in the minors. When he was rushed to the big leagues in 2010, the Marlins needed a left fielder and moved Morrison to the outfield.
