Monroe, a right-handed hitter, has spent parts of each of the last eight seasons in the big leagues and will be a candidate to compete for the role of a backup outfielder, helping to balance out the Pirates' glut of lefty hitters. Perez returns to the organization after playing with the Pirates' Double-A Altoona club all of last season. Perez appeared in 57 games and finished with a .281 batting average and 22 RBIs. He also had a 37.5 percent success rate in throwing out potential basestealers.
