News: Josh Brown's first NFL pass was not a thing of beauty but he doesn't care about style points. The St. Louis Rams' kicker was named the NFC's special teams player of the week Wednesday after a game that saw him kick a 41-yard field goal but also throw a 36-yard touchdown pass to tight end Daniel Fells. Well, throw might be overstating it a bit. It was more of a flip on a fake field goal attempt that helped the Rams end a 17-game losing streak with a 17-10 victory over Detroit. Brown, who was a running back playing eight-man football at Foyil (Okla.) High School, said he considered trying to run for a first down. Instead, he sort of shot-putted the ball to Fells, who broke one tackle en route to the end zone. "I didn't really even use my shoulder on that throw," Brown said. "I wasn't trying to make it pretty, just effective."

Analysis: Brown, who is in his seventh season, to some razzing from his teammates. "Everybody has been busting me on," Brown said. "If you're looking for style points, there were definitely none awarded. But, you know, we got six points out of it and results are the only thing that matters." In about 30 years, Brown said the throw may look better when he's describing his touchdown pass to his grandkids. "Nothing wrong with a little embellishment," Brown said. Brown's touchdown pass might be one of the few bright moments he has in 2009. The Rams offense is still struggling, so Brown remains a low-end Fantasy flier

Our View: Barron has been in coach Steve Spagnuolo's doghouse and was benched last week in favor of John Greco, but the two have appeared to put their troubles behind them and move on. Looks like Barron will get another crack at it in Week 5.

News: St. Louis WR Donnie Avery had only one catch in the team's Week 8 game against the Lions. The catch went for 15 yards. He was targeted six times in the game.

Analysis: Avery has only four combined catches in the Rams' last three games. This was the third time this season in eight games that Avery has made only one reception and the sixth time he has failed to catch a touchdown pass. This was one of Avery's best chances to have a big game, going against a weak Lions pass defense, but he could not capitalize. The Rams are on a bye Week 9 then take on the Saints Week 10. Avery will likely be considered a low-end option for that contest

Donnie Avery was held to one catch for 15 yards in Week 8. Avery may have been on the field simply to serve as a decoy. He was hobbled in practice this week by a shoulder injury and QB Marc Bulger barely distributed the ball his way. He has a bye in Week 9 to rest up.

The National Football Post reports that Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo is sticking with Marc Bulger as his starting quarterback despite the former Pro Bowler's ineffectiveness this season.

Our View: Bulger has just three touchdowns and a miserable 68.2 quarterback rating this season, but Spags still sees potential there. The 1-7 Rams are on a bye week, but Bulger will still be the voice in the huddle when they return to the turf against the Saints in Week 10. "I think Marc has done everything we needed him to do," Spagnuolo said. "I've said this before; it's not one position on the side of the ball, it's everybody. He has been a leader, he manages the game." Sounds like Bulger isn't going anywhere, but he doesn't deserve a second look in fantasy formats.

Our View: If Gibson does play this week, it will be his first action of his NFL career, as he failed to see any time while with the Eagles. The Rams seem to like him very much, but it's a long shot that he contributes to this terrible offense much this season.

Rams signed franchise player O.J. Atogwe to a one-year, $6.342 million contract. The sides will likely try to hammer out a long-term deal after the season. Atogwe, 28, is one of the league's most underrated players. A true ballhawk, the free safety's 32 turnovers caused are the most in the NFL since 2006. He'll line up near the line of scrimmage more in St. Louis' new aggressive scheme and should be one of the top IDP DBs off the board in drafts.

Rams FS O.J. Atogwe will sign his one-year franchise tender on Wednesday, according to The Sporting News' Albert Breer. That means no long-term deal is in the works, at least until after this season. Our View: Ramsey looks like the favorite to replace DL Gary Gibson, who is out for the season with a foot injury. The Rams are a nightmare on defense and are thin up the middle with Adam Carriker out for the season, so don't expect Ramsey to make a huge difference.

The St. Louis Rams placed Gibson on injured reserve with a broken ankle Monday, meaning he will miss the remainder of the season.

Impacts: Gibson was hurt during Sunday's 38-10 loss to Minnesota and will have surgery. Gibson, who had 12 tackles this season, was replaced on the roster by wide receiver Tim Carter Monday.

Analysis: Grant is a second-year linebacker out of Ohio State. He was active for just two games last season, but has been in the lineup for all four games this year. However, he has just three tackles as a backup LB. Grant still has little Fantasy appeal

Quincy Butler is the leading candidate to step into Bradley Fletcher's (knee) starting cornerback job. Nickel back Justin King has been limited this week with a groin injury. Butler, claimed off waivers from the Cowboys last December, has mainly been a special teamer. Our View: Quincy Butler replaced him in the secondary. Bartell is the Rams' best cornerback, and would be a tough loss if forced to miss time. The Rams are yet to update his status.

Second-year pro Clifton Ryan was getting a lot of reps in Glover's place.Ryan is a big man who is more suited to stop the run than Glover is. The team uses a rotation, so Glover will still get snaps, but likely in more pass rushing situations than anything else.

Paris Lenon exited the game at Detroit in the fourth quarter with a back injury.
