Vick Conditionally Reinstated By NFL
Goodell May Consider Full Reinstatement By Week 6
Michael Vick was reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday and could play in regular-season games as early as October.Vick can immediately participate in preseason practices, workouts and meetings and can play in the final two preseason games - if he can find a team that will sign him. Once the season begins, Vick may participate in all team activities except games, and Goodell said he would consider Vick for full reinstatement by Week 6 (October 18-19)."Needless to say, your margin for error is extremely limited," Goodell said in a letter to Vick. "I urge you to take full advantage of the resources available to support you and to dedicate yourself to rebuilding your life and your career. If you do this, the NFL will support you."Goodell suspended Vick indefinitely in August 2007 after the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback admitted bankrolling the "Bad Newz Kennels" dogfighting operation. (ESPN)
FF Today's Take: To his credit, Vick has taken several steps to rebuild his repuation and credibility around the league. He has every reason in the world to cooperate after filing for bankruptcy protection last July. A great deal of his financial plan to pay back his creditors revolves around his ability to make NFL-type money again.

Bad news for Vick: not even Oakland wants him
The Oakland Raiders, of all teams, are the latest to say they are not interested in singing Michael Vick, according to the Oakland Tribune.
Our View: This might be harder than anyone expected. When not even the Oakland Raiders are willing to gamble on you, you might really be in trouble. It's still very early in training camp season, so Vick could become a lot more appetizing once teams start not liking what they're seeing, but it's 100 percent conceivable that Vick might not don an NFL uniform in 2009.

NFL.com reports Ray Anderson, the NFL's executive vice president of football operations, said free-agent QB Michael Vick (Falcons) could find himself suiting up in Week 1 of the regular season "if all goes well" and that commissioner Roger Goodell’s decision to conditionally reinstate the quarterback shouldn’t be viewed as a six-game suspension. Vick gets conditional reinstatement
News: The NFL announced Monday that free-agent QB Michael Vick has been conditionally reinstated. The terms of his reinstatement is as follows: He is eligible to practice in full and can play in a club's final two preseason games. However, commissioner Roger Goodell won't consider full reinstatement just yet and reserves the right to rule on such a reinstatement by Week 6 based on "the progress he makes in his transition plan." Additionally, the NFL announced that Tony Dungy will serve as a mentor to Vick, who was recently released from federal prison for running an illegal dogfighting ring. "This step-by-step approach is not meant to be a further punishment and should not be viewed as such," Goodell said in a letter to Vick. "Instead, it is intended to maximize the prospect that you can successfully resume your career and your life. I believe that a transitional approach with a strong network of support will give you the best opportunity to manage effectively the various issues and pressures that you will inevitably face in the coming weeks and months and earn your full reinstatement." Vick has Owens, others on his side
News: Terrell Owens wants Michael Vick to be reinstated immediately by the NFL, and said any extension of the quarterback's suspension would be similar to "kicking a dead horse." Speaking after the Buffalo Bills training camp practice Sunday morning, the star receiver referred to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's handling of Vick's status as "unfair." Owens also lobbied to have more of the league's high-profile players voicing their opinion in support of Vick and asked the NFL Players Association to become more involved. Owens said Vick deserves a second chance. "Why shouldn't he? I mean, there's a lot more guys around the league that have done far more worst things than that and gotten second chances," Owens said. Owens said he would welcome Vick as a teammate. "Michael Vick is a guy that really hasn't any character issues besides what he got a prison sentence for, so why not?" he said. Bills safety George Wilson, the team's NFLPA representative, agreed with Owens. "How do you bring a man out of suspension and then suspend him again? I mean, he's paid his debt," Wilson said. "I think you just continue to hold him down by bringing him back and then suspend him." Wilson said he intends to discuss Vick's status with Owens and other teammates to determine whether to bring the Bills players' position to the union. "We'll see where it goes, but I think Terrell is right in stating his position," Wilson said. "This is an instance where perhaps our players association needs to try to get involved." [...]

According to Pro Football Talk, the much-anticipated meeting between NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and troubled quarterback Michael Vick may not happen this week after all.
Our View: The meeting is crucial to Vick's reinstatement, as Goodell plans to use their time together to judge if Vick seems reformed and trustworthy. If the meeting is postponed it could be that Vick needs extra time to prepare to try and make the right impression. Regrarless of when it occurs, Vick will have to be very convincing, seeing as how he's already lied to Goodell once.

Of course, he could very well change his mind after meeting with Vick, but as long as Vick shows remorse he should get an opportunity to play this season. News: Suspended NFL star Michael Vick's federal dogfighting sentence ended Monday, freeing him to lobby for a return to the field. Vick's attorney Lawrence Woodward told The Associated Press outside Vick's suburban Virginia home that the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback had been released from federal custody as scheduled. That means Vick no longer has to wear the electronic monitor he's had on while under home confinement for the last two months of his 23-month sentence. Vick hopes to soon meet with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, who has said he would review Vick's status after Vick completed his sentence. Goodell has said he wants to sit down with Vick, but it's unclear when that face-to-face meeting will take place. "The review of his status is ongoing," league spokesman Greg Aiello said Monday. "There are no further details and no timetable." [...]

Vick awaiting more judgments
News: Michael Vick's federal dogfighting sentence is scheduled to end Monday and that is also when he will go back on trial - facing a whole new series of judgments. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, teams, fans and sponsors are among those who will weigh in on Vick's future. First and foremost, Goodell must decide whether Vick's suspension will end and, if so, when - allowing the former Atlanta Falcons quarterback a chance to play in the league again. Goodell is expected to act fairly quickly, so Vick and teams know his status for the coming season. Training camps for veterans start opening next weekend. There has been communication between Vick's camp and the league about the process, although neither side is making substantive comments publicly about where things stand. "As we said in 2007, when he was indefinitely suspended, Michael Vick's status will be reviewed following the conclusion of the legal proceedings," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said. Vick has kept silent and probably will continue to until Goodell makes an announcement. While Goodell is declining interview requests on this topic, his position is fairly well-outlined: He wants a face-to-face meeting, and Vick must show serious contrition. "Michael's going to have to demonstrate to myself and the general public and to a lot of people: Did he learn anything from this experience? Does he regret what happened?" Goodell said in May. "Does he feel that he can be a positive influence going forward? Those are questions that I would like to see when I sit with him." Once Goodell's ruling is rendered, NFL clubs will have to determine what, if any, interest they have in Vick. Among the questions teams will ponder: What kind of shape is he in? What position should he play? What type of public relations hit might he bring? "Teams certainly are going to want to know: Where is his mind-set? Going forward, is he going to be a good citizen? You'd interview him and hope you get a good feel in the interview. That's the first thing," former Redskins and Texans general manager Charley Casserly said. "The second thing is: You've got a guy two years out of football, with no structured conditioning program." [...]

Goodell to make decision on Vick
According to the National Football Post, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell plans to make a decision on whether troubled quarterback Michael Vick's indefinite suspension will remain in place about three weeks after he is released from house arrest.
Our View: July 20th is Vick's final day of house confinement. There have been rumblings that he may not be allowed to play at all this season, so teams likely won't show any interest in him until they find out if the ban is lifted. Even if it is, he may have trouble attracting suitors.

Vick could play in UFL
TSN is reporting that ex-Falcons' quarterback Michael Vick may have an opportunity to play in the new UFL this season. UFL commissioner Michael Huyghus told the media "One of the things that is important in our premiere season is to showcase the quality of talent and the coaches, and to be able to show outstanding players who find themselves in this quagmire the NFL creates," Huyghue said. "Michael Vick might be that kind of player because he is ... a phenomenal talent, but he needs transitionining back into the NFL."
Our View: Vick's NFL status for this season is very much in doubt, and at this point the best move for Vick seems to be the UFL. He can showcase himself in a competitve setting, and more importantly he can do it at the quarterback position. We will keep you updated on the situation.
