Crabtree tampering allegations not dead
Despite Michael Crabtree finally signing with the San Francisco 49ers this month, the league is still pursuing tampering allegations the team made against the New York Jets in regards to the rookie receiver earlier this season, according to Pro Football Talk.
Our View: 49ers coach Mike Singletary is not the kind to let things go, and he could be sending a message from the rest of the league to the new brash regime in New York. Nothing seems likely to come of it, however, except for maybe a humbling.
Crabtree tampering case is still moving forward

49ers | Crabtree played more snaps than any receiver in Week 7
Matt Barrows, of the Sacramento Bee, reports San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree played in more snaps than any of the team’s other wide receivers in Week 7. Head coach Mike Singletary said that nothing jumped out at him, that Crabtree performed the same he had been in practice. Still, Singletary said he enjoyed watching Crabtree. "I just wanted to see it on film," Singletary said. "Just like you see a good movie - you want to see it again."
Crabtree had five catches for 56 yards in his NFL debut Sunday
Crabtree had five catches for 56 yards in his NFL debut Sunday in a 24-21 loss at Houston.
Impacts: Coach Mike Singletary was pleased with Crabtree's performance. "I was kind of calm," Crabtree said. "I practiced on getting calm and coming into the game, knowing what I was supposed to do and executing my plays. I think I did a good job, but I've got some more work to do."

Michael Crabtree posted five receptions for 56 yards in the Week 7 loss to Houston.
Our View: All things considered not a bad professional debut for Crabtree, who missed the offseason program, training camp, as well as the entire preseason and first four regular season games. Regardless, don't look for much progress next week at Indianapolis, as the Colts are brutal against the pass.

49ers | Crabtree expected to be on field for half of plays
John Crumpacker, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree is expected to be on the field for at least half of the team's offensive plays in Week 7.
High praise for 49ers' Crabtree
News: He might be a rookie who has yet to play an NFL game, but there has been lots of praise for Michael Crabtree based on his work in practice this week. The Santa Rose Press-Democrat Tweeted that Crabtree "looks the part on the 49ers practice field" and has looked quick and had good hands. 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said this week that Crabtree has progressed much faster than expected, especially in learning the playbook, but that it hasn't been determined if he'll start on Sunday. "At this time, we really hadn't made any decision," Raye said, "but he has handled the stuff that we've given him pretty well, the nuances of going to play and having the conditioning to play more than what we thought is still up in the air." [...]
Crabtree To Play Half Of Team's Snaps
Niners OC Says Incredible Mental Aptitude Led To Quick Rise
Michael Crabtree's surprising knowledge of terminology, formations and pass routes explains why he could see more playing time than once expected Sunday. That was the word Thursday from 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye. "From where we originally started and what I said early on to you about starting him with a small package and playing 11 personnel packages, we determined that it was (best) ... to let him go at 'X' in terms of practice and see how much he could retain and what kind of physical conditioning he was in and make the decision based on his availability that way," Raye told reporters. Crabtree's availability gives Raye options that haven't been available to him in past weeks. The offense has the potential, at least from a personnel standpoint, to become more exciting and dynamic in Week 6. Raye said he expects Crabtree to play about half the snaps. That would probably include virtually all the third-down snaps with more than 1 yard to go for a first down, plus some of the other snaps. "He is a natural football player, playing wide receiver," Raye said. "He has an uncanny knack to conceptualize the picture quicker than most young guys, so the words that paint the picture of the play, he gets it pretty quickly so far. So I would anticipate that will continue." (ESPN.com)
FF Today's Take: Just about everybody believed Crabtree's long holdout would lead to a wasted season, so the fact a team that will likely be in the playoff picture all season long has so quickly named Crabtree a starter suggests they see something pretty special with him. The chances he delivers useful fantasy numbers in Raye's run-heavy offense are still pretty slim, but they are exponentially better than they were a few weeks ago.

49ers will start WR Crabtree
News: In what is stunning news out of 49ers camp, the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reports that the team will replace WR Josh Morgan with rookie Michael Crabtree in the starting lineup for their Week 7 game at Houston. Crabtree was initially slated to play on a limited basis as a slot receiver for the club. Head coach Mike Singletary said there was a "strong possibility" that Crabtree would start, and that was confirmed to the paper when Morgan said he had lost his starting role. "I'm helping him learn my position and take my position," said Morgan. "It is what it is. If he can help us win, I'm all right with that. They gave him my spot. The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said WR Michael Crabtree will play in Week 7. The 49ers will initially have a small play package for Crabtree.
49ers will play Crabtree next week
News: Michael Crabtree will make his NFL debut in Week 7 at Houston as planned. Head coach Mike Singletary said when Crabtree signed last week he expected the rookie to be ready by next weekend, and the coach is pleased with the progress he's made so far in practice. "Oh, he will play," Singletary said. "Michael's doing fine. He's working his tail off. I think every day he gets out here and every rep that he takes, it makes him that much better. He's been studying his tail off and it shows when he's out here. He doesn't have a whole lot of questions on the field. He's running the right routes, he's doing the right things. Week 7 to mark Crabtree's debut
49ers coach Mike Singletary confirmed on Wednesday that rookie wide receiver Michael Crabtree will make his NFL debut on October 25 when the 49ers take on the Texans, according to Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
Our View: The 49ers' bye week this week gives him the opportunity to have a very intense week of preparation and playbook study. The Texans have a mediocre pass defense, so Crabtree could conceivably have an impact in his first game. Still, it's not likely after all the time he has missed.

Crabtree staying in San Fran during bye week
According to the Twitter page of 49ers' beat writer Matt Maiocco, wide receiver Michael Crabtree will stay in San Francisco and work while the rest of his teammates get away during the bye week. Coach Mike Singletary was asked why Crabtree is staying in town, and he replied that Crabtree "already had his bye week."
Our View: Crabtree needs all the work he can get, and the bye week is the perfect time to make up for lost time. Singletary's might be the best one-liner coach in the NFL these days, because he lets you know he means business but it is usually pretty funny.

Crabtree starting work with Niners
News: Michael Crabtree exerted extra effort running one of his first pass routes as a San Francisco 49ers wide receiver and then defensive back Nate Clements got in the way. "He put a lot into it," 49ers coach Mike Singletary said Friday. "He made great moves. But Nate just reads the quarterback and lets him do all those things. Michael turns around and sees Nate catching the ball. He wondered how that could happen after making all those moves that worked in college. It was a reminder this is another level. This is different." The added attention heaped on the 49ers this week as a result of signing their first-round draft pick to a six-year contract on Wednesday has not been a distraction. "It's been its own sideshow," Singletary said. "We anticipated that. At this point we are not letting anything take the focus away from what's important." The 49ers are going to give him time to get assimilated. [...]

Crabtree exerted extra effort running one of his first pass routes as a San Francisco 49ers wide receiver and then defensive back Nate Clements got in the way.
Impacts: The 49ers are going to give him time to get assimilated. Backup quarterback Alex Smith is impressed with Crabtree's desire to learn as much as he can in a short time. "He is always coming over and asking questions," Smith said. "He takes advantage of the opportunities and sticks with us every chance. He wants to pick up what he can."

Deion Sanders, Eugene Parker, and Connect the Dots
We’ve got some pretty terrific tipsters who are like us: They enjoy a good conspiracy theory. Consider the following:* Eugene Parker used to be Deion Sanders’ agent. (Haven’t been able to find a link anywhere talking about why or when they parted.)* When Michael Crabtree announced he was going to the NFL, he worked out
Crabtree to play in the slot
The National Football Post is reporting that 49ers' wide receiver Michael Crabtree will be used as a slot receiver when he makes his debut with the team. Offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye believes playing Crabtree in the slot gives him the best chance of making an impact sooner, because Crabtree reportedly only ran two different routes in college.
Our View: The learning curve is going to be steep, especially if Crabtree really did only run two routes in college. The NFL playbook is very extensive, so this just adds to the theory that Crabtree will not make a major impact with the team this season.

Top-10 picks usually don't receive signing bonus money in order to maximize the value of the contract over the length of the deal. Bruce thinks Crabtree will learn quickly
The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that 49ers' wide receiver Issac Bruce believes that rookie Michael Crabtree will learn the offense very quickly. "It shouldn't take long," Burce said. "He seems like a bright guy."
Our View: When the media can actually get Bruce to say something, it is almost always positive. He isn't the kind of guy to throw a teammate under the bus, but we have to disagree in this instance. Wide receiver can be one of the toughest positions to transition from college to the NFL, and that's with a full offseason, training camp, and preseason. Fantasy owners who jumped on Crabtree yesterday when he signed need to temper their expectations for this season, especially considering the offense he plays in with the Niners.

Explaining the hitches in Crabtree's deal
The biggest debate on the Michael Crabtree negotiations, which ended Wednesday after a 72-day holdout, was what to do about millions of dollars of escalators. Crabtree wondered if the San Francisco 49ers' offense would give him the chance to hit the 60-catch threshold to trigger some of those escalators or one-time bonuses. Impacts: Team spokesman Bob Lange confirmed the deal in a text message to The Associated Press early Wednesday. Terms were not disclosed. The former Texas Tech star is the only draft pick who had yet to sign. Crabtree could provide the game-breaking wide receiver threat the 49ers have been lacking, assuming he can quickly learn the offense after missing all of training camp.

49ers Reach Deal With Crabtree
Six-year Deal
After one day of face-to-face talks, the 49ers have reached a deal with first-round draft pick Michael Crabtree.Working into the early morning, Crabtree signed a six-year deal, ending his contract impasse after 72 days. The No. 10 overall pick will be at the team's Santa Clara headquarters today when the 49ers hit the practice field after Tuesday's day off.Citing league sources, ESPN reported that the Crabtree will get a six-year contract that he can void in five years if he meets undefined performance clauses. Crabtree, the No. 10 overall choice, was the only unsigned pick out of the 256 players selected in the April draft. The former Texas Tech receiver reportedly has rebuffed the 49ers' five-year, $20-million offer that includes $16 million in guarantees. To be able to play this season, Crabtree was facing a NFL-mandated signing deadline of Nov. 17. (San Jose Mercury News)
FF Today's Take: After weeks without talking the deal is finally done. Remember, Crabtree missed all of the offseason minicamps and OTAs while recovering from a foot injury and of course skipped training camp during the holdout, so how much he can contribute this season remains to be seen. he'll need time to learn the offense and mesh with his QB before making any significant fantasy impact.

Crabtree finally a 49er
Holdout draft pick Michael Crabtree and the San Francisco 49ers have finally agreed to a contract, according to the Associated Press.
Our View: The saga ends. The deal is reported to be for six seasons, but financial terms have not yet been disclosed. Crabtree has missed a 3-1 start for San Francisco, and will likely be getting brought up to speed for weeks. That being said, if you are in dire need of a receiver, there's no reason in not taking a flier on him if the owner who drafted him got frustrated and dropped him.

Crabtree, 49ers meeting on Tuesday
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that holdout wide receiver Michael Crabtree and the 49ers are indeed meeting on Tuesday, and that he believes "something" will get done.
Our View: It's about reached the point where something has to. Crabtree has basically zero leverage because of San Francisco's 3-1 start, and has probably realized by now that he will almost surely get even less money if he re-enters the draft in 2010. It won't be surprising at all if after today Crabtree is finally out of the practice field with San Francisco.

Report: Crabtree, 49ers renewing talks
Updating an earlier item, ESPN is now reporting that the 49ers and holdout draft pick Michael Crabtree are indeed set to renew contract negotiations.
Our View: Little other detail is available at the moment, but as they say, where there's smoke, there's fire, so the two sides might finally be nearing an end to this protracted and ridiculous holdout. The absolute final day Crabtree could sign to become a Niner is November 17.

Deion: Crabtree getting close to signing
NFL Network analyst Deion Sanders hinted on Sunday that holdout wide receiver Michael Crabtree may soon cave and sign with the 49ers, according to the Sacramento Bee.
Our View: Sanders is a well-known Crabtree confidant, and him dropping hints very well could be the prelude to a contract. Despite being 3-1, San Francisco has a dramatic lack of weapons on the offensive side of the ball, and obviously, the longer Crabtree holds out the more money he is losing. A deal makes too much sense for one not to get done soon.
